What we do
Read vs Listen is a UK reading companion built around a single question. There is no shortage of places to find out whether a book is any good. There are very few that answer the question you actually have standing in the Kindle store at eleven at night: is this one to read, or one to listen to?
That's the only question we answer. Every article covers one book, gives one verdict, and shows the reasoning: narrator, structure, pace, point of view and length. We don't rate books out of five and we don't do spoilers. The verdict is about format, not quality.
Why format matters
The books people bounce off are usually not bad books. They're good books bought in the wrong format. A sprawling multi-generational saga on audio, where you lose track of who is who by hour four. A fast, twisty thriller in print, when the audiobook would have had you hooked in an afternoon. Same book, very different experience, and it usually comes down to structure rather than quality.
How verdicts are made
Every verdict comes from the same published framework, which you can read in full on the How we decide page. It's built from signals rather than opinion: does the book jump timelines, how many points of view is it juggling, is the prose the point, who narrates the audiobook and how is it produced.
Those signals are based on what readers generally prefer to read or listen to. They aren't a claim about everyone. Plenty of people follow jumping timelines on audio perfectly happily, and if that's you, the defaults will be wrong for you some of the time.

There are no ads, no sponsored posts, no paid placements and no affiliate relationship with any publisher. Nobody pays to be recommended here and nobody can. The commission costs you nothing extra.
