Reading order
Frank Herbert’s six were published in this order, which is also how Audible numbers them, Dune series 1 to 6, and they run forward in story time in the same order. AbeBooks describes these six as the core of the Dune reading experience.
- Dune (1965)
- Dune Messiah (1969)
- Children of Dune (1976)
- God Emperor of Dune (1981)
- Heretics of Dune (1984)
- Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)
Frank Herbert wrote six Dune novels. Counts that include the later prequels and sequels by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson vary by source: AbeBooks lists 21 novels and one Wikipedia list gives 23. In story order, the official dunenovels.com chronology places many of those prequels and short stories before Dune; it does not recommend a reading order. They are not covered on this page.
Dune: Part Three
Dune: Part Three opens in UK cinemas on 18 December 2026, with previews from 15 December (BFI listing). Deadline reports that it is adapted from Dune Messiah; Warner Bros and Legendary give the date but do not name the book.
