A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas

Short answer: for the A Court of Silver Flames audiobook vs book choice, we say either works (50% confidence, close call). We scored Elizabeth Evans’s 10th Anniversary Recording, which runs 22 hours 55 minutes, unabridged, with one narrator voicing both leads. The print edition runs 757 to 784 pages and has a map. The only confirmed factors are the length, which favours audio, and the map, which favours reading.

What this book actually is

A Court of Silver Flames is the fifth book in Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series in Bloomsbury’s and Audible’s numbering; some listings call it book 4 because A Court of Frost and Starlight is a novella. Bloomsbury published it on 16 February 2021 as a 768-page hardback, and the UK paperback (26 May 2022) is listed at 757, 768 or 784 pages. A fan wiki calls it the longest book in the series.

It moves the story from Feyre to her sister Nesta and to Cassian; fan sources say it alternates between them in the third person, after three books of Feyre in the first person. AudioFile notes that the audiobook “is designed for mature listeners”. Audible US shows a Goodreads Choice Award 2021, Most Popular, for it.

Book 6, A Court of Splintered Harmony, is out on 27 October 2026, read by Elizabeth Evans.

The case for reading it

The case for print is thinner here than in books 1 to 3. The names and places are carried over from four earlier books rather than introduced, and two viewpoints are easy to follow. What print may add is the map: Open Library’s record of the UK paperback reads “757 pages : map”. We have not seen what it shows, but a map is recorded in the print edition.

In print, a chapter heading could also tell you at a glance whether you are with Nesta or Cassian. Whether the UK edition does that is not confirmed.

The case for listening to it

The book follows one story about Nesta and Cassian, with the threat from the human queens in the background, told in order after the war. Nothing confirmed in print needs to be seen, so it has the fewest reasons to read of the five books so far.

The question most searchers ask is who reads Cassian. The answer is the same in both solo editions: the narrator who reads Nesta. Elizabeth Evans reads both in her recording, as Stina Nielsen does in the original, and there is no male narrator.

The audiobook in detail

We scored Elizabeth Evans’s 10th Anniversary Recording, released by Recorded Books on 30 May 2025: 22 hours 55 minutes, unabridged, or about 15 hours 17 minutes at 1.5x and about 11 hours 28 minutes at 2x. Evans is Sarah J. Maas’s “handpicked narrator” for the re-recordings of books 1 to 5, and she reads book 6. Her edition and Nielsen’s 2021 original are both single-narrator unabridged readings, so the newer one is scored. As of October 2026 Nielsen’s leads Audible UK search and Evans’s leads Audible US. RBmedia said on 24 August 2026 that three of Evans’s anniversary recordings had reached Spotify’s Top 10 Audiobooks of the Year, without saying which three.

Stina Nielsen’s original runs 26 hours 5 minutes, the longest recording in the series. In the original set she is the third narrator, after Jennifer Ikeda (books 1 and 2) and Amanda Leigh Cobb (book 3 and the novella). AudioFile wrote in May 2021 that she “builds a nuanced personality for Nesta”; that praise belongs to her edition. GraphicAudio’s “Dramatized Adaptation” (2023) comes in two parts, about 20 hours 33 minutes in all, with 26 performers and no role credits; as an adaptation, it is not scored.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards listening if you want one familiar voice for the whole series. Elizabeth Evans is Sarah J. Maas’s “handpicked narrator” for the re-recordings of books 1 to 5 and reads book 6, and in this book she reads both leads. The story is told in order with two viewpoints, so there is little to lose track of on audio.

Lean towards reading if you want the map to hand, or like to see at a glance whether you are with Nesta or Cassian. Whether the UK edition marks the chapters that way is not confirmed, and we have not seen what the map shows.

At 22 hours 55 minutes the recording is long, and listeners who want each lead in a different voice will not find that in either solo edition. GraphicAudio credits no roles.
