What this book actually is
Into the Blue is Emma Brodie’s second novel, after Songs in Ursa Major, which won the American Book Award according to her publisher. It was published on 7 April 2026 by Ballantine Books in the US, subtitled A Love Story, and by Orion in the UK. It was a Reese’s Book Club pick, carries Penguin Random House’s bestseller label, and Taylor Jenkins Reid and Gabrielle Zevin both endorse it.
In the summer of 2000, seventeen-year-old AJ, a would-be comedy writer working at a video rental shop in a small Massachusetts town, meets Noah Drew, the heir to an acting dynasty. Then he disappears. Seven years later they are cast together in a science fiction TV production in New York. The book is in parts, includes improv scenes and a fictional TV show, also called Into the Blue, and turns on why Noah vanished, which this page does not reveal.
The case for reading it
The case for reading it rests on the structure. The story covers years, and readers describe time jumps and writing that drifts between timelines. If you like to check back on when each part is set, print makes that easy. It also contains comedy skits and scenes from a script, which one reader found hard to follow and another called epistolary, though how they are laid out in print is not confirmed. The UK and US hardbacks are 448 pages.
Some Goodreads readers found it slow, or the ending rushed. Reading lets you set the pace, and skim if you want to.
The case for listening to it
This is a love story told from one woman’s point of view, which is the kind of structure that works best on audio, and it is a book about comedy, where timing is everything. Kirkus reviewed the audiobook itself and calls Julia Whelan “a powerhouse”, singling out her timing in the improv scenes as “spot-on”. A book blogger called it “truly an outstanding performance”.
Whelan also narrated Atmosphere, the Taylor Jenkins Reid novel that this site says to listen to, with 67% confidence, and Publishers Weekly says fans of Reid “will not want to miss this”. The unabridged recording runs 15 hours 9 minutes in the US listing, about 10 hours at 1.5x.

Whether they are the same recording is not confirmed, though they share a narrator and publisher.
No cast, music or bonus material was found. Speed times are calculated from the US length: about 10 hours 6 minutes at 1.5x and 7 hours 35 minutes at 2x.
Who should ignore this verdict
Anyone who likes to track a story across years by flicking back, since the time jumps are the main reason to read it. Anyone who wants to see the skits and script scenes as written. And anyone put off by slow starts, who may prefer to skim in print rather than sit through them.
