What this book actually is
Land is Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of 2026, from the author of Hamnet. In 1865 Tomás and his son Liam are mapping the west of Ireland for the Ordnance Survey, in a country not long emptied by the Great Hunger. The story moves between that year, the narrator’s childhood and a time many millennia back.
It is on the Waterstones Book of the Year 2026 shortlist. What happens to Tomás, whether father and son get home and Liam’s later life are not covered here. The book deals with famine, a parent and child separated, and grief.
The case for reading it
Three timelines run through the book, and Lonesome Reader and The List both describe it switching between them. In print a section break or a date tells you where you are at once; on audio you rely on the narrator’s voice and the first lines of each section.
The book is also built on place and on precise sentences, which some readers will want to go back over.
The case for listening to it
Kirkus calls Dane Whyte O’Hara’s reading “a striking performance”, and listeners rate it 4.84 on Audible UK and 4.81 on Audible US. An Irish actor also handles the Irish names and words.
At 16 hours 47 minutes it is long, and comes down to about 11 hours 11 minutes at 1.5x.
The audiobook in detail
Tinder Press publishes the unabridged recording on Audible UK and Random House Audio on Audible US, both read by Dane Whyte O’Hara at 16 hours 47 minutes. Whether they are one recording or two is not confirmed.
No PDF companion is listed, and no source confirms a map in the printed book.
Who should ignore this verdict
Lean towards print if you lose track when a story changes era. Lean towards audio if you liked O’Farrell’s Hamnet as a listen, or if a long book is easier for you to finish by listening.
