Little Women audiobook vs book: which should you choose?

The book follows four sisters through four years of growing up, starting at Christmas, and a chatty narrator tells it in order. Nothing in the book’s structure points to print.

Read vs Listen·Verdict last reviewed 23 October 2026·6 min read
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Short answer: for the Little Women audiobook vs book choice, we say listen on Audible (65% confidence, leaning). The scored edition is Christina Ricci’s unabridged reading for Penguin Audio (2012), 19 hours 3 minutes on Audible UK and Audible US. Check you are getting the complete novel, as some UK editions are Part One only. The book is long and nothing confirmed favours print. Laura Dern’s Audible Original is a dramatisation, not the full text.

The Laura Dern production is the highest-produced and best-rated recording (4.7 from 5,632 ratings on Audible US), but Audible calls it a dramatisation and it runs about seven hours shorter than unabridged readings, so it is never scored. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One criterion points to listening
✓
Long bookThe Penguin Classics paperback runs to 504 pages, over 400.
–
Read by the authorIt is fiction, and Alcott does not narrate.
–
Single point of view and narratorThe narrator follows four sisters and Laurie, each with her own storyline, so the book does not have a single viewpoint.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe names are ordinary (Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy, Marmee, Laurie), and nothing suggests unfamiliar names or dialect.
–
Full cast or produced audioNot confirmed from a named source, so it does not count.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationNot confirmed from a named source, so it does not count.
No criteria point to reading
–
Jumping timelinesThe story is told in order, with a three-year gap at the start of Part Two. The out-of-order timeline belongs to the 2019 film.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorAn all-seeing narrator follows four sisters rather than rotating viewpoints.
–
Story depends on images or layoutChapter 10 reproduces the Pickwick Portfolio newspaper, but it is one chapter in 47 and the plot does not depend on its layout.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThe names are ordinary. Laurie is also Theodore Laurence, but nothing suggests the names cause trouble.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNo maps, family trees or footnotes are reported.
–
Literary or dense proseNot confirmed from a named source, so it does not count.
–
Narration criticisedNot confirmed from a named source, so it does not count.
How the score adds up
Listening 3 points, reading 0

Listening: long book (3), 3 points. Reading: nothing confirmed, 0 points. 100% of the confirmed points favour listening, so the verdict is listen on Audible at 65% confidence (leaning). Only 3 points could be confirmed, so confidence is held at 65% until more evidence is found.

What this book actually is

Little Women was published by Roberts Brothers in two volumes, the first on 30 September 1868 and the second in April 1869, and combined as one novel in 1880. It has 47 chapters; Part One ends at chapter 23. In the UK the second volume was titled Good Wives, and some UK editions still print it as a separate book. At 183,833 words, the Penguin Classics paperback runs 504 pages.

It follows the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, from the Christmas that opens the book, their first without their father, through about four years of growing up, with Part Two picking up three years later. The narrator talks to the reader directly. It has been filmed in 1933, 1949, 1994 and 2019, when Greta Gerwig’s version, with Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, was released in the US on Christmas Day. The film tells the story out of order; the book does not.

The case for reading it

The case for print is about holding a long book with four storylines. Chapter headings show you whose turn it is, and you can flick back to check what happened to Meg while you were with Amy in Europe. Chapter 10, the sisters’ Pickwick Portfolio newspaper, is laid out as poems, notices and advertisements, which works read aloud but looks better in print.

Time is the other factor. At about 12 hours 15 minutes to read at 250 words a minute (calculated), the book is quicker than any unabridged recording. Whatever format you choose, make sure it is the complete novel: some UK editions publish Part Two separately as Good Wives.

The case for listening to it

The book is told in order by one narrator, which suits audio. It is cosy and episodic, so it is easy to follow even if your attention wanders. Christina Ricci’s unabridged reading is the only celebrity one on both stores, but listeners disagree about it, so try the sample. In the US, Kate Reading and Barbara Caruso are strong alternatives; Audible quotes a critic calling Caruso’s “a delightful reading”.

If what you want is the atmosphere rather than every word, Laura Dern’s Audible Original is the best-rated recording by a distance, with a full cast and Dern as Louisa May Alcott narrating. It is a dramatisation of 12 hours 15 minutes, not the full text, which is why it is not the edition scored here.

The audiobook in detail

Christina Ricci’s recording is the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition audio, 19 hours 3 minutes, released on 23 October 2012, at £18.49 on Audible UK and $24.75 on Audible US as of October 2026. Listeners mention music at chapter ends. Whether the UK and US listings are the same recording is not confirmed. At 1.5x it takes 12 hours 42 minutes, at 2x about 9 hours 32 minutes.

Other unabridged readings run from 18.7 to 19 hours 45 minutes: Kate Reading (Listening Library, 2011), Barbara Caruso (Recorded Books) and C. M. Hébert (Blackstone), with many more in the US. Anna Koval’s 2019 UK recording is 8 hours 49 minutes because it is Part One only. The BBC sells a set of three full-cast radio dramatisations, including Little Women (2017) and Good Wives (1993), and LibriVox has free recordings.

Who should ignore this verdict

Anyone short of time may prefer print. At about 12 hours 15 minutes to read at 250 words a minute (calculated), the book is quicker than any unabridged recording, which runs about 19 hours.

Anyone who tries Christina Ricci’s sample and does not take to it, since listeners disagree about her reading. Anyone who wants the Pickwick Portfolio chapter as it is laid out in print, as poems, notices and advertisements, or chapter headings to show whose turn it is across four storylines.

Anyone studying the book will want the print edition and its chapter numbers. Anyone who wants the feel of the story more than the full text is better served by the Laura Dern drama than by either unabridged format.
