The book has one narrator and one point of view, and it follows one story into the Games. The recording won Audiobook of the Year.

Short answer: for the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook vs book choice, we say listen on Audible (100% confidence, clear cut). Jefferson White reads the audiobook, which runs 12 hrs 48 mins and won Audiobook of the Year at the 2026 Audie Awards. Print has the Poe epigraph and the verses near the end, and no source confirms that the audiobook reads them aloud. What this book actually is
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is Suzanne Collins's fifth Hunger Games novel and her second prequel, published by Scholastic on 18 March 2025. Set 24 years before The Hunger Games, it follows Haymitch Abernathy from Reaping Day into the Games. The US hardcover is 400 pages and the UK Scholastic hardback 416. Its first printing was 2.5 million copies, and it sold more than 1.5 million in its first week, according to Wikipedia.
Lionsgate's film, directed by Francis Lawrence, with Joseph Zada as Haymitch alongside Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close and Elle Fanning, is due on 20 November 2026.
The case for reading it
The case for print here is small. The book opens with a passage from Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven and includes verses near the end, and the printed part and chapter headings give the story a visible shape. No source says whether the audiobook reads the epigraph or the verses, so if they matter to you, a print copy is the safe way to have them.
There is also a personal reason, which our checks deliberately leave out: if you love this series, you may simply want it in print. That reason only ever decides a close call, and this is not a close call.
The case for listening to it
Everything about its structure suits audio. Haymitch tells the whole story in the first person, it runs forward from the reaping, and Jefferson White reads it on his own in 12 hours 48 minutes, about 8 hours 32 minutes at one and a half times speed. Audible UK calls the narration warm and masterful, and one reviewer said White sounds like a younger version of the Haymitch that Woody Harrelson played on screen. Where the story includes songs, the recording performs them aloud.
The recognition matches the reviews: it won Audiobook of the Year at the 2026 Audie Awards.
The audiobook in detail
Scholastic Audio released the unabridged recording on 18 March 2025, the same day as the book. It runs 12 hours 48 minutes on Audible UK, Audible US, Apple Books and audiobooks.com, and OverDrive agrees. Audible US shows a 4.8 rating from more than 35,000 reviews at the time of writing. No bonus PDF is mentioned.
White is best known as an actor, from Yellowstone and Civil War, and this is the only audiobook credit we found for him. Each book in the series has a different narrator: Tatiana Maslany reads the original trilogy (10 hours 35 minutes, 11 hours 3 minutes and 11 hours 19 minutes) and Santino Fontana reads The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (16 hours 16 minutes).
Who should ignore this verdict
Anyone collecting the series in print, or who wants the epigraph and closing verses in front of them. Anyone coming straight from the trilogy recordings who wants continuity of voice, since every book in the series has a different narrator. And anyone who reads faster than 12 hours 48 minutes for a 400-page novel, which many people do.
