Tom Lake audiobook vs book: which should you choose?

A mother tells her three daughters the story of her acting years on a Michigan cherry orchard, and Meryl Streep reads it in the audiobook.

Read vs Listen·Verdict last reviewed 23 October 2026·5 min read
Tom LakeAnn Patchett

Short answer: for the Tom Lake audiobook vs book choice, we say either works (53% confidence, close call). Meryl Streep reads the UK Bloomsbury edition on her own in 11 hours 22 minutes (11h 22m), unabridged, and the US Harper edition has the same narrator and length. A single narrator for a story told by one woman favours audio. Two timelines woven together favour print, so neither format clearly wins.

What this book actually is

Tom Lake is Ann Patchett’s ninth novel, published on 1 August 2023 by Bloomsbury in the UK and Harper in the US, at 320 pages. It was shortlisted for Waterstones Books of the Year 2023, named a Times Book of the Year 2023, and picked by both Reese Witherspoon’s book club and the BBC Radio 2 Book Club.

In spring 2020, on the family’s cherry orchard in Northern Michigan, Lara tells her three daughters about her past as an actress. She narrates in the first person, and the book moves between the orchard and the story she tells, which Kirkus calls “braided strands”.

Lara played Emily in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town three times, and Patchett’s Author’s Note points readers to the play.

The case for reading it

The case for print is the structure. Tom Lake has two timelines: the orchard in 2020, and Lara’s past, which she tells her daughters in instalments. In print you can turn back to check which period a scene belongs to; a listener has to keep track as it goes.

Some readers will also want the writing at their own pace. Critics praise it, and Library Journal’s one complaint, “Too many crystalline details”, is about pace rather than clarity. We found no source saying the sentences reward slowing down, so that stays a matter of taste rather than a check.

The case for listening to it

The premise is a woman telling a story out loud. Lara narrates the whole book in the first person, and the past arrives as what she tells her daughters, so every move between periods happens inside one voice. Meryl Streep, a three-time Academy Award winner who has narrated about 30 audiobooks, reads all of it on her own.

The reading has a strong record in its US edition: it was a 2024 Audie Award finalist in three categories, AudioFile wrote that “Streep narrates with breathtaking sensitivity”, and the New York Times Book Review called her “ideal for narrating Tom Lake”. Listeners rate it 4.5 on both Audible UK and Audible US, as of October 2026.

The audiobook in detail

Bloomsbury’s UK edition was released on 1 August 2023 and runs 11 hours 22 minutes, unabridged: about 7 hours 35 minutes at 1.5x and 5 hours 41 minutes at 2x. Harper’s US edition has the same narrator, length and date, and the UK listing carries a ©2023 HarperCollins Publishers credit.

Because we could not confirm the two are a single recording, we scored the UK edition, as the one UK buyers meet first, and credit the Audie nominations only to the HarperAudio edition that received them. We found no other English recording; Portuguese and German editions exist.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards the book if you like to see exactly where a story sits in time. Tom Lake has two timelines, the orchard in 2020 and Lara’s past, and in print you can turn back to check which period a scene belongs to. The same goes for anyone who wants Patchett’s sentences at their own speed, or who found the two timelines of Hamnet easier in print.

Lean towards the audiobook if you like the idea of the story being told aloud. Lara narrates the whole book in the first person, so every move between periods happens inside one voice, and Meryl Streep reads all of it on her own. The UK edition runs 11 hours 22 minutes, about 7 hours 35 minutes at 1.5x.
