Audible vs Kindle: which one should you use for each book?
The right service depends on how each book is written and recorded. Here is the test, with real examples and dated prices.
Choose by the book, not the service. Use Audible when the audiobook adds something the printed book does not have, such as a cast or sound effects. Use Kindle when the book has visual elements that don't translate well as an audiobook, such as maps or footnotes.
Prices on 25 October 2026: in the US, Audible Standard is $8.99 a month, Audible Premium is $14.95 a month for one credit, and Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited) is $11.99 a month. In the UK, Audible Standard is £5.99 a month, Audible Premium is £8.99 a month for one credit, and Kindle+ is £9.49 a month.
The test: what sends a book to Kindle or to Audible
Read vs Listen checks every book against the same thirteen published criteria: seven reading criteria and six listening criteria. A criterion either applies or it does not, and one that cannot be confirmed from a named source does not count. The weights are on the How it works page.
The reading criteria point to Kindle:
- Jumping timelines: the story moves between time periods or tells events out of order.
- Three or more points of view, one narrator: three or more viewpoints, all read by a single narrator.
- Story depends on images or layout: pictures, documents, message threads or typography carry the plot.
- Many similar-sounding names, shown by listener reviews or a published cast list.
- Literary or dense prose, confirmed by a named source.
- Narration criticised: a low Audible Performance rating, or a named critic criticising the narration.
- Maps, family trees or footnotes, when no PDF companion comes with the audiobook.
The listening criteria point to Audible:
- Full cast or produced audio: a cast, a separate narrator for each viewpoint, or music and sound design.
- Read by the author: the author narrates their own memoir (not their own novel).
- Single point of view and narrator: the book has one viewpoint, and one narrator reads all of it.
- Award-winning or praised narration, from an award or a named critic.
- Unfamiliar names or dialect, which can be easier to take in when spoken.
- Long book: the print edition is more than 400 pages long.
When the two sides come out close, the verdict is Either: choose whichever format you will finish.
Check your own book
Answer five questions about the book you have in mind. Each one comes from the published criteria. The result shows which way your answers lean. It is not a score. The Read vs Listen app will run the full check on any book (coming soon).
This is a quick check, not a verdict. How we decide shows the full criteria, and the Read vs Listen app will run them on any book (coming soon).
Nine examples from the site's verdicts

Each card names the criterion that decides the verdict, checked on 25 October 2026.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the clearest Listen. The Full-Cast Edition is narrated by Cush Jumbo, with Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore and a named cast, and runs 9 hours 37 minutes. Lessons in Chemistry is the clearest Read. The story opens in 1961, drops back to 1952, and moves between several viewpoints, all read by one narrator, Miranda Raison.
A Court of Silver Flames shows how an Either verdict happens. The print edition runs 757 to 784 pages, which favours audio. It also has a map, which favours reading. Two of the nine are leaning verdicts rather than clear ones: Strangers, because its story opens near the end and doubles back, and The Mirror of Infinite Endings, because only one criterion applies. More books are on the best on audio and best on the page shelves.
What each service gives you
Audible sells audiobooks, and its Premium plan adds a catalogue you can stream. Kindle sells ebooks. Kindle+ lends ebooks and some audiobooks for a monthly fee. An Audible credit is a token that buys one audiobook of any length, and you keep that audiobook.
Audible is renaming its Premium Plus plan to Premium, so both names may appear for a while.
| Plan | What you get | If you cancel | US price | UK price | Free trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audible Standard | One audiobook a month from the full Audible collection. This is a selection, not a credit, and unused selections do not roll over | You lose the titles you selected. Anything you bought is yours to keep | $8.99 a month | £5.99 a month | 30 days, if you have not been a member or had a trial in the last 12 months |
| Audible Premium (formerly Premium Plus) | One or two credits a month, unlimited listening to the Plus Catalogue, and member sales | Titles bought with credits or cash are yours to keep. Unused credits are lost at the end of your final billing period, and Plus Catalogue titles lock | $14.95 a month (1 credit), $22.95 a month (2 credits), $149.50 a year (12 credits), $229.50 a year (24 credits) | £8.99 a month (1 credit), £69.99 a year (12 credits), £109.99 a year (24 credits) | 30 days. Prime members get two free audiobooks in the trial instead of one |
| Kindle ebooks | One ebook at a time, at the price shown on each book | There is no subscription to cancel | Price per book | Price per book | Not applicable |
| Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited) | Borrow up to 20 ebooks, audiobooks or comics at a time, with no due dates. Thousands of the ebooks include audio narration | Titles are borrowed, not bought | $11.99 a month plus tax | £9.49 a month | Amazon says to check eligibility on the Kindle+ sign-up page |

Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited)
Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ on 22 October 2026, in both the US and the UK. Amazon gives the price as $11.99 a month plus tax in the US and £9.49 a month in the UK. Members can hold up to 20 titles at a time, with no due dates.
Amazon describes the US catalogue as millions of ebooks and thousands of audiobooks. Thousands of Kindle+ ebooks also include audio narration at no extra cost, marked with a headphone icon in both countries. Whether the UK audiobook catalogue matches the US one is not confirmed.
Some audiobooks sold by Amazon use computer-generated narration (Amazon calls it Virtual Voice). This is not a human narrator. Amazon says it started in the US and that these audiobooks are clearly labelled, but its Kindle+ pages do not say how many Kindle+ audiobooks use it. A full cast, an author reading their own memoir and praised narration are all human performances, so computer-generated narration meets none of those listening criteria. Check the label before choosing the audio version.
The main difference from Audible: Kindle+ lends titles while you pay, and an Audible credit buys an audiobook you keep.
Using both: Whispersync for Voice
Whispersync for Voice is now called Read & Listen. Audible's help pages (1 October 2026) say it keeps your place when you switch between a Kindle ebook and its audiobook. You need both the ebook and the audiobook, and the title must carry the Read & Listen badge.
This is the practical way to read at home and listen on a commute. It suits Either books best.
When you own both, Immersion Reading lets you read and listen at the same time in the Audible app. The text is highlighted as the narrator reads. Read & Listen works in the Audible app on Android and iOS, on Fire tablets running FOS8 or later, on Kindle e-readers from 2022 onwards, and in the Kindle app on Android, iOS, Fire tablets and PC.
Owning both formats costs more. Amazon's Add Narration offer gives a lower price on the audiobook when you buy it with the matching Kindle ebook. The price varies by book, so check the Kindle ebook's listing. In the UK it is a 1-Click purchase paid by credit card.
What a month of each really buys
The figures below use prices from 25 October 2026. In the UK, Audible Standard is £5.99 a month and Audible Premium is £8.99 a month for one credit, or £69.99 a year for 12 credits, which works out at £5.83 a credit (calculated).
| Plan | Price (US) | What it buys | Cost per audiobook (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audible Standard | $8.99 a month | One selected audiobook a month, lost if you cancel | $8.99, not kept |
| Audible Premium, 1 credit | $14.95 a month | One audiobook a month that you keep | $14.95 |
| Audible Premium, 2 credits | $22.95 a month | Two audiobooks a month that you keep | $11.48 |
| Audible Premium Annual, 12 credits | $149.50 a year | 12 audiobooks that you keep | $12.46 |
| Audible Premium Annual, 24 credits | $229.50 a year | 24 audiobooks that you keep | $9.56 |
| Kindle+ | $11.99 a month (£9.49 in the UK) | Up to 20 borrowed titles at a time | Depends on how many you borrow |
Prices from audible.com, the Audible US help pages and About Amazon, 25 October 2026. Cost per audiobook is the price divided by the number of credits (calculated).
A credit buys any audiobook, whatever its length. For the three Listen examples, one $14.95 credit works out like this:
| Listen example | Length | Cost per hour with one $14.95 credit (calculated) |
|---|---|---|
| Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Full-Cast Edition | 9h 37m | $1.55 |
| The Housemaid Is Watching | 11h 42m | $1.28 |
| Strangers | 7h 4m | $2.12 |
Lengths from the Read vs Listen verdict pages, checked 25 October 2026. Cost per hour is $14.95 divided by the length (calculated).
Two rules decide whether a plan pays off. Standard selections do not roll over to the next month. Unused Premium credits are lost if you cancel.
Does listening to audiobooks count as reading?
Whether listening "counts" is a question of definition. Research can test how much people understand and remember. Four studies are useful.
- Rogowsky, Calhoun and Tallal (2016), SAGE Open: 91 adults aged 25 to 40 were randomly assigned to listen to an audiobook, read an e-text, or do both at once. The material was the preface and a chapter of Laura Hillenbrand's non-fiction book Unbroken. The study found no statistically significant difference in comprehension between the groups, either straight away or two weeks later.
- Deniz, Nunez-Elizalde, Huth and Gallant (2019), Journal of Neuroscience: nine participants listened to and read the same stories from The Moth Radio Hour while their brains were scanned. The authors report that the brain areas tuned to the meaning of words responded in highly correlated ways during listening and reading.
- Clinton-Lisell (2022), Review of Educational Research: a meta-analysis of 46 studies with 4,687 participants. Overall, reading and listening comprehension were not reliably different (g = 0.07). Reading came out slightly ahead when readers set their own pace (g = 0.13), and on questions that needed inference rather than recall of facts (g = 0.36).
- Clinton-Lisell (2023), Educational Research: Theory and Practice: 30 studies with 1,945 participants compared reading while listening with reading alone. The author describes the overall benefit as trivial (g = 0.18). There was no reliable benefit when readers set their own pace (g = 0.06).
The number g measures the size of a difference between groups; zero means none. Taken together, listening and reading give similar understanding overall. Reading has a small edge when readers set their own pace and when questions ask them to work things out. Reading and listening at once, as Immersion Reading does, adds little for readers who set their own pace.
Other ways to listen and read: Spotify and Libby
| Service | What you get | UK | US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify Premium Individual | 15 hours a month of listening from Spotify's audiobook subscriber catalogue. Unused hours expire at the end of each billing period. Extra hours are sold as top-ups. Premium Student does not include audiobook hours, and on Duo and Family plans only the plan manager gets them | £12.99 a month | $12.99 a month |
| Libby | Free ebooks and audiobooks from your public library, borrowed with a library card | Free with a UK library card. Suffolk Libraries, for example, lends up to 10 titles at a time for up to 3 weeks | Free with a US library card. Most Libby books can also be read on a Kindle e-reader, in the US only |
Sources: spotify.com Premium pages (UK and US) and Spotify support; libbyapp.com and Libby help; Suffolk Libraries; Burlington County Library System, New Jersey. Checked 25 October 2026.
Spotify gives hours of listening, not titles. A 15-hour month covers the 9 hour 37 minute Full-Cast Edition of Chamber of Secrets once, with about 5 hours 23 minutes left (calculated).
Questions people ask
Is Audible better than Kindle?
Neither is better for every book. Audible suits books where the recording adds something, such as a full cast or an author reading their own memoir. Kindle suits books with jumping timelines, many viewpoints read by one narrator, or pictures and documents that carry the plot. The test on this page applies to any book.
Do you keep Audible books if you cancel?
Yes, if you bought them. Audible's help pages say any audiobook bought with a credit or by card is yours to keep. Unused credits are lost at the end of your final billing period, Plus Catalogue titles lock, and Audible Standard members lose the titles they selected (Audible help, checked 25 October 2026).
What is the difference between Audible and Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited)?
Audible sells audiobooks: each Premium credit buys one you keep, at $14.95 a month in the US or £8.99 in the UK for one credit. Kindle+ lends titles: for $11.99 a month in the US or £9.49 in the UK, you can borrow up to 20 ebooks, audiobooks or comics at a time. Prices checked 25 October 2026.
Do Amazon Prime members get Audible for free?
No. Audible's help pages say Audible is not included with Amazon Prime. Prime members get two free audiobooks in the 30-day Audible trial instead of one. On 25 October 2026 the Audible US membership page also showed a Prime offer of $0.99 a month for four months plus a $20 Audible credit, then $8.99 a month.
Can you use Audible and Kindle together?
Yes. Read & Listen, formerly called Whispersync for Voice, keeps your place when you switch between a Kindle ebook and its audiobook. You need both formats, and the title must support it. Immersion Reading, in the Audible app, highlights the text as the narrator reads.
Is Audible worth it if you only read a few books a year?
It depends on how many audiobooks you would buy. In the US, one credit costs $14.95 on the monthly plan, or $12.46 each on the 12-credit annual plan (calculated). In the UK, one credit costs £8.99 a month, or £5.83 each on the £69.99 annual plan (calculated). Standard costs $8.99 or £5.99 a month, but you lose the selected titles if you cancel. Prices checked 25 October 2026.
Is listening to an audiobook the same as reading?
For understanding, it is close. A 2022 meta-analysis of 46 studies found no reliable overall difference between reading and listening comprehension (g = 0.07). Reading came out slightly ahead when readers set their own pace (g = 0.13) and on questions that needed inference (g = 0.36).
