Short answer: for the A Boy Called Christmas audiobook vs book choice, we say listen on Audible (65% confidence, leaning). Stephen Fry reads the unabridged Canongate recording in 4 hours 32 minutes. One storyteller follows Nikolas and one narrator reads all of it, so audio has the edge, but only one criterion could be confirmed and confidence is held at 65%. What this book actually is

A Boy Called Christmas is Matt Haig’s origin story for Father Christmas. Nikolas, a poor woodcutter’s son in Finland, sets off into the frozen north to find his missing father, meets elves, reindeer and a truth-telling pixie, and grows up to become Father Christmas. It is illustrated by Chris Mould.

The 2021 film was released by Sky and StudioCanal in the UK and by Netflix in other countries. Haig wrote three more Christmas books after it.

The case for reading it

Chris Mould’s black-and-white drawings run through the book, and no PDF comes with the audiobook. No source says they carry story the text leaves out, so this does not count in the score, but for reading aloud to a child the pictures are a real pleasure.

The case for listening to it

One storyteller follows Nikolas from start to finish, and one narrator reads all of it. Stephen Fry, who is also quoted praising the book on the Audible UK listing, is a narrator families tend to love.

At 4 hours 32 minutes, it is about 3 hours 1 minute at 1.5x.

The audiobook in detail

Canongate publishes Stephen Fry’s unabridged reading at 4 hours 32 minutes on Audible UK. It had 4.7 stars from 2,743 ratings on 23 October 2026. One listener comments on the pronunciation of the Finnish names.

In the US, Fry’s recording for Listening Library was named a 2018 Odyssey Award Honor audiobook by the American Library Association. That edition runs 4 hours 25 minutes, the same as a movie tie-in listing on Audible UK, so the honour may belong to a different recording from the one we scored.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards print for bedtime reading with Chris Mould’s pictures.

Lean towards audio for long car journeys before Christmas; Stephen Fry reads the whole book on his own.
