What this book actually is
The Christmas Pig is J.K. Rowling’s 2021 children’s novel, published with the audiobook out the same day. Jack loves his toy pig, Dur Pig, more than anything. When DP is lost on Christmas Eve, Jack sets off into the Land of the Lost with the Christmas Pig, the replacement toy, to bring him home.
It is a standalone adventure for children and families. How the rescue goes is not covered here.
The case for reading it
The hardback is illustrated by Jim Field, with nine black-and-white spreads and decorative art through the book. No source says the pictures carry story the text leaves out, and we have not confirmed whether the audiobook comes with them, so this does not count in the score. If you are reading aloud to a child, the pictures are still a reason to have the book.
The case for listening to it
This is a full production rather than a straight reading. It has about 20 credited voices, with a separate actor for Jack and for the Christmas Pig, an original score by Anne Dudley played by The Chamber Orchestra of London, and Dolby Atmos. That is the strongest listening criterion we have.
At 5 hours 37 minutes, it is about 3 hours 45 minutes at 1.5x, or a few evenings of family listening in December.
The audiobook in detail
Audible Studios produced the unabridged recording, 5 hours 37 minutes. Amaka Okafor narrates, Rocco Padden plays Jack and Gerran Howell plays the Christmas Pig. It had 4.7 stars from 1,476 ratings on Audible UK on 23 October 2026, and Audible’s editors and listeners praise it.
It is a premium-priced audiobook (£21.08 on Audible UK when we checked), so buying it with an Audible credit is better value.
Who should ignore this verdict
Lean towards print if you are reading aloud at bedtime and want Jim Field’s pictures in front of you.
Lean towards audio for car journeys and family listening; the cast and the score add something a single reader cannot.
