Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two criteria point to listening

✓
Award-winning or praised narrationKirkus praises Turpin, Pean and Graham’s sermons. Library Journal calls them “an all-star cast of seasoned narrators” and says Graham voices the sermons “with perfect elan”. Both review the Macmillan Audio edition.

What this book actually is

Dominion is Addie E. Citchens’s debut novel, published in the US by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in August 2025 and in the UK by Europa Editions as a paperback original in January 2026. It is set in 2000 in Dominion, a fictional town in Mississippi, in the family of a Baptist preacher.

Two women tell it: Priscilla, the preacher’s wife, and Diamond, a teenager who loves his youngest son. Short third-person sections about the son close each chapter. The publisher’s reading guide lists rape, murder, physical abuse, adultery and drug use among its subjects.

It was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction, whose chair of judges, Julia Gillard, called it “a taut novel about power, race and privilege”.

The case for reading it

The church bulletins are the main reason to read it in print. Each of the first seven chapters opens with “From the Minister’s Desk”: a date, a Bible passage, study questions with blank lines for answers, and a verse with a word missing. They read like the handouts you would find on a pew, and the blanks invite you to fill them in. Then, after chapter 7, they disappear, and in print that absence is part of the book’s structure. Nobody has documented how the audiobook renders the blanks, or whether it signals that the bulletins have stopped.

The language is the other thing print shows. The book writes Southern Black American English as it is spoken, in the narration as well as the dialogue: “aint” and “yall” without apostrophes, “Lawd”, “oughta”, double negatives. In print you see those spelling choices; in the audiobook you hear the speech they represent.

The case for listening to it

This recording is built around the book’s structure. Each strand has its own narrator: Bahni Turpin as Priscilla, Angel Pean as Diamond, Dion Graham for Sabre and the sermons, and Andre Giles for the interludes. You always know whose chapter you are in, which is the main thing print usually does better. Library Journal reports instrumental gospel music between chapters, something no printed book can offer.

It is short, too: 7 hours 1 minute, about three and a half hours at 2x. And the dialect that the printed book spells out is performed by narrators who can speak it. The one caution is that several listeners on Audible UK and US found one of the male narrators’ Southern accents hard to follow.

The audiobook in detail

Europa Editions UK published the UK audiobook on 24 April 2026, three months after the paperback, at 7 hours 1 minute, unabridged. Macmillan Audio’s US edition came out with the hardcover on 19 August 2025, at the same length and with the same four narrators; whether the two are one recording is not confirmed. It is four narrators reading, not a dramatisation.

Spotify put it at the top of its list of 2025 debut audiobooks. Whether the narrators read the PRISCILLA and DIAMOND headings, or anything of the bulletins’ blank lines, is not stated anywhere we checked.

Who should ignore this verdict

Anyone who wants to see the bulletins, or fill them in: they are a print device, and the audio may not reproduce them. Anyone who finds strong regional accents hard to follow on audio, who should try a sample first. And readers who want to see how the book spells its dialect, a choice you only notice in print.
