What this book actually is
The Mercy Step is Marcia Hutchinson’s debut novel, published in the UK by Cassava Republic Press in July 2025, with the paperback following in April 2026. It follows Mercy, a girl in Bradford, from before her birth in December 1962 to about the age of eleven. Hutchinson calls it “autofiction, loosely based on my childhood in 1960s Bradford.”
It took a long time to find a home. By her own count, “The 55th was Cassava Republic.” It went on to win the Discover Prize at the British Book Awards 2026 and was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction. In the US there is no print edition yet: Black Cat, an imprint of Grove Atlantic, is due to publish it on 9 March 2027.
The case for reading it
Print has two small advantages. The chapters are titled and written as stand-alone pieces, one of them “No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs”, and a title like that frames what follows before you start it. Whether the audiobook reads the titles aloud is not stated.
The second is the patois. Mercy’s family speaks Jamaican patois, and the book spells at least some of it, such as “One Bwoy Pickney” for her baby brother. We could not confirm how much of it is written out in print. If you like to see how a voice is written down, print shows you. That is the whole case for reading: there are no timelines to track, no rotating narrators and no layout to see.
The case for listening to it
Few audiobooks have a narrator this close to the material. Hutchinson was born in Bradford in 1962 to Windrush-generation Jamaican parents, which is where and when Mercy is born, and she reads the novel herself. She also writes by talking: “I dictate my first drafts while walking, speaking straight into Google docs.” So a book that began as speech is turned back into speech in the audiobook.
The structure suits audio as well. One narrator tells one childhood in order, so there is nothing to keep track of between chapters. On Audible UK, where it is rated 4.7 from 109 ratings as of October 2026, listener reviews single out the author’s reading.
The audiobook in detail
Recorded Books published the audiobook on 22 July 2025, the same day as the Cassava Republic hardback. It runs 9 hours 3 minutes, unabridged: 6 hours 2 minutes at 1.5x and about 4 hours 32 minutes at 2x. Audible UK and Audible US sell the same recording, read by Hutchinson. In the US, that means the audiobook has been out since July 2025 while the print book waits until March 2027.
A second audio edition, from Simon & Schuster Audio, is listed for pre-order on both stores for 9 March 2027 at about 9 hours, with no narrator named. If you want the author’s reading, choose the Recorded Books edition. We found no critic’s review of the narration, so the case for it rests on listeners and on who she is.
Who should ignore this verdict
Readers who want to see the patois written down, and how each chapter title frames its piece. Anyone wary of authors reading their own work: no critic has reviewed her performance yet, so try a sample first. And US readers who want a print copy, who face a wait until March 2027 unless they buy the UK paperback.
