What this book actually is

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is Gail Honeyman’s debut novel, published by HarperCollins on 18 May 2017; the first edition runs to 383 pages. Eleanor works as a finance clerk in Glasgow and lives by routine, with a weekly Wednesday phone call from “Mummy”, until one turning point starts to change her life.

Eleanor tells the story herself, and Wikipedia describes her as unreliable through lack of self-awareness. Written material appears inside the story, including a tweet, a case-file page and newspaper clippings.

It won the 2017 Costa First Novel Award, and at the 2018 British Book Awards it was Overall Winner and Début Book of the Year. Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine optioned the film rights in 2017; we found no released film as of October 2026.

The case for reading it

There is no strong case for print here. Nothing jumps in time, there is one narrator, the cast is small and the setting is a real city. Critics praise Eleanor and the book’s warmth rather than prose to slow down for.

What print might add is the look of the documents inside the story, the tweet, the case-file page and the clippings, and the three titled parts one secondary source reports. We could not confirm how any of them is set out in print. If they are laid out in a way that carries meaning, that would be a reason to read.

The case for listening to it

The book is told in one voice from start to finish, and the audiobook gives that voice to a performer. Cathleen McCarron reads it alone, and her reading in the Penguin Audio edition won the 2018 Audie Award for Fiction, ahead of a field that included Fredrik Backman’s Beartown. Kirkus praises her “articulated British accent and studied pacing”.

The story also moves in one direction, from a single turning point onwards, with the past arriving through what Eleanor remembers. That is easy to follow on audio, and at 11 hours 2 minutes, or 5 hours 31 minutes at 2x, it is a mid-length listen. Listeners rate it 4.6 from 68,124 ratings on Audible US, as of October 2026.

The audiobook in detail

Penguin Audio’s US edition came out in 2017 and runs 11 hours 2 minutes, unabridged: about 7 hours 21 minutes at 1.5x and 5 hours 31 minutes at 2x. HarperCollins’s UK edition, also from 2017 and also read by McCarron, runs 11 hours 36 minutes. Whether the two are the same performance is not confirmed, and we found no other English recording.

We scored the Penguin Audio edition because the 2018 Audie Award for Fiction was given to it, and awards stay with the edition that won them. Until the two editions are confirmed as the same performance, the page does not credit the award to the UK release. McCarron’s other audiobook credits include several Val McDermid novels.

Who should ignore this verdict

Readers who want to see the tweet, the case file and the clippings as documents, which we could not confirm in print. And readers who like to linger over a narrator’s odd turns of phrase and go back to them, which is easier in print than in an 11-hour recording.
