Content note: sources list assisted dying among the novel’s themes, and the book and its film were criticised by disability-rights campaigners. This page does not describe them.

Short answer: for the Me Before You audiobook vs book choice, we say listen on Audible (65% confidence, leaning). W F Howes’s 2026 recording runs 15 hours 18 minutes, unabridged, read by five narrators, and nobody has published who reads which character. Two 2012 recordings are also on sale. A long book points to audio, and nothing confirmed points to print.

The verdict

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One criterion points to listening
✓
Long bookThe UK Penguin paperback is listed at 512 pages (edition dated 3 February 2022), over 400.
–
Read by the authorIt is fiction, read by actors.
–
Single point of view and narratorThere are several viewpoints (Louisa, Will, his parents, Nathan, Treena) and several narrators, so it is not one viewpoint and one narrator.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationNo award or named critic praise was found for the 2026 W F Howes recording. For the older Penguin Audio recording, the only named review, Kirkus, is mixed to negative, calling the narrator switches unnecessary and jarring.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectIt has a contemporary English setting, and no source points to unfamiliar names or dialect.
–
Full cast or produced audioNot confirmed from a named source, so it does not count.
No criteria point to reading
–
Jumping timelinesIt is one forward story, with no sign of jumping timelines.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorThere are several viewpoints, but the 2026 recording has five narrators. Kirkus reports that on the older recording viewpoint chapters go to different narrators, so one narrator does not read them all.
–
Story depends on images or layoutNo evidence shows that images or layout carry the story.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo evidence shows confusable names.
–
Literary or dense proseNo named source calls the prose dense or literary.
–
Narration criticisedThe 2026 recording has no Performance ratings yet and no named critic criticises it. Kirkus did criticise the narrator switching on the older Penguin Audio recording.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNo maps, family trees or footnotes. No PDF is noted on the Audible page either.
How the score adds up
Listening 3 points, reading 0

Listening: long book (3), 3 points. Reading: nothing confirmed, 0 points. 100% of the confirmed points favour listening, so the verdict is listen on Audible at 65% confidence (leaning). Only 3 points could be confirmed, so confidence is held at 65% until more evidence is found.

What this book actually is

Me Before You is Jojo Moyes’s novel, published by Michael Joseph on 5 January 2012 and the first of a trilogy with After You (2015) and Still Me (2018). The UK first edition runs to 480 pages. Lou Clark becomes carer to Will Traynor, and the publisher’s summary says Will “has a plan to end his life”.

Lou narrates most of the book in the first person. From about halfway, some chapters are told by Will’s mother and father, by Nathan and by Lou’s sister Treena.

It was a Richard and Judy Book Club pick and was filmed in 2016 by Thea Sharrock, with Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin and a screenplay by Moyes. The book and film drew criticism from disability-rights campaigners, including the #MeBeforeEuthanasia protests.

The case for reading it

The case for print is not proven, and it depends on the chapters that are not told by Lou. They start about halfway through, and in print each may be headed with the name of whoever is telling it; we could not confirm that in a current edition. If it is, a reader knows whose chapter it is from the first line.

Otherwise the book has few features that need print. It moves forward, the cast is small and the names are ordinary, and we found no critic singling out the prose.

The case for listening to it

The story suits listening: one relationship and one decision drive it forward through Lou’s months as Will’s carer, and Lou’s first-person voice carries most of it. At 15 hours 18 minutes, or 7 hours 39 minutes at 2x, the 2026 recording is the middle length of the three.

Every English recording shares the book between several narrators, and Kirkus and listeners report that other narrators read the chapters that are not told by Lou. Listeners praise that; Kirkus, reviewing the Penguin Audio edition, found the switches distracting. Who reads which character in the 2026 recording has not been published, which is why it does not count as a recording that does something a plain reading cannot.

The audiobook in detail

W F Howes released what it calls “an all-new recording” on 16 July 2026, read by Sabrina Bartlett, Tamsin Topolski, Nicholas Boulton, Rachel Atkins and Blair Annison Chisholm. It runs 15 hours 18 minutes, unabridged: 10 hours 12 minutes at 1.5x and 7 hours 39 minutes at 2x. W F Howes’s 2012 recording, with six narrators, runs 16 hours 37 minutes, and Penguin Audio’s 2012 US recording, also with six, runs 14 hours 40 minutes. All three are on Audible UK and Audible US.

The two W F Howes recordings look equally produced, both multi-narrator and unabridged, so we scored the newer one, as we do whenever editions tie. A listen check comparing them could overturn that, and we would revisit the scoring if it did. The two stores list different versions first: Audible UK the 2012 W F Howes recording and Audible US Penguin Audio’s, which is nearly two hours shorter. Whether the 2012 W F Howes and Penguin Audio recordings share any performances is not confirmed.

Who should ignore this verdict

Readers who want to know at a glance whose chapter they are in may prefer print, which may show it more clearly. So may listeners who have found switching between narrators distracting in other audiobooks, as Kirkus did with the Penguin Audio edition. And anyone who prefers a single reader: none of the three English recordings has one.
