Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Three criteria point to listening
✓
Single point of view and narratorWikipedia names Alice Scott as ‘the protagonist and viewpoint character’, and Margaret’s family history is told to her in conversation rather than as separate viewpoints. Julia Whelan reads all of it.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationAudioFile gave Julia Whelan an Earphones Award, calling her reading ‘expressive yet nuanced’, and she was an Audie finalist for romance narration. It was also No. 1 in AudioFile’s Best Romance Audiobooks of 2025.
✓
Long bookThe UK paperback is 432 pages and the hardback 418, both over 400.
–
Full cast or produced audioOne narrator reads it.
–
Read by the authorIt is fiction, read by Julia Whelan.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectNo source confirms this.
One criterion points to reading
✓
Jumping timelinesThe story cuts between the present day and a family history reaching back to the gold rush, with Margaret telling her story in pieces.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorWe could not establish three or more distinct viewpoints. Alice and Hayden are rivals who both listen to one story.
–
Story depends on images or layoutNo images or layout carry the plot.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo listener or critic says the names sound alike. One reader mentions many Ives family members across generations, but that is about how many names there are, not names that sound alike.
–
Literary or dense proseIt is a romance, and no named source describes the prose as dense.
–
Narration criticisedAudible listeners rate the performance 4.76 from 16,065 ratings (UK and US pooled), and no named critic criticises it.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesA reviewer wishes the book had a family tree, which implies it has none. The Penguin UK page and other reviews list no map, family tree or footnotes.

What this book actually is

Great Big Beautiful Life is Emily Henry’s 2025 novel, published on 22 April by Berkley in the US and on 24 April by Viking in the UK, as a 418-page hardback; the UK paperback followed on 7 May 2026. It debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times fiction list and was a Reese’s Book Club pick.

Two writers, Alice Scott and Hayden Anderson, compete to write the biography of Margaret Ives, and Alice is the viewpoint character for the present day. Margaret’s family story is told in numbered interludes between Alice’s chapters, and it reaches back to the gold rush and early Hollywood. Kirkus says Henry “explores the world of historical fiction” here. The book runs to 36 chapters and an epilogue, and Henry’s next novel, Modern Classic, is due on 8 April 2027.

The case for reading it

The structure is the case for print. The book moves between Alice’s present and a century of Margaret’s family, and print lets you see where each interlude starts and flick back to one you have half forgotten. Some listeners and reviewers report losing track of the Ives family tree, which is easier to rebuild with the book in hand than from a recording.

Our verdict for Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation was to read it, for a similar reason: the story is told across years. We could not confirm how the interludes here are headed in print, which is why the layout criterion is not counted; a clear heading on each would strengthen the case for reading.

The case for listening to it

The case for audio is Julia Whelan. AudioFile’s editors ranked her recording No. 1 of the best romance audiobooks of 2025, and Kirkus’s audiobook review says her “expressive yet nuanced performance captures Alice’s determined spirit”, with distinct voices for the supporting characters. One reviewer reports a different register for Margaret, old and young.

The two strands are also easier to tell apart than most dual timelines. One is a modern contest between rival biographers, and the other is a family history set generations earlier. Whelan also reads Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation, Beach Read, Book Lovers and Happy Place, so anyone who knows her voice from those knows what to expect.

The audiobook in detail

Penguin Audio released Whelan’s solo, unabridged reading on 22 April 2025 in the UK and the US. The UK listing runs 12 hours 7 minutes, about 8 hours 5 minutes at 1.5x and about 6 hours 4 minutes at 2x; the US listing runs 12 hours 2 minutes. Both are sold on both stores, and whether they are the same performance is not confirmed. With narrator and date tied, we lead with the UK edition.

AudioFile’s ranking is a US list, so we credit it to Whelan’s recording rather than claim it for the UK listing. Listeners rate the book 4.2 on Audible UK, from 475 ratings, and 4.6 on Audible US, from 16,456, as of October 2026.

Who should ignore this verdict

Readers who struggled with the time jumps in People We Meet on Vacation, or who like to keep a family history straight with the book in hand, should start with the printed book. Sources list several deaths, estrangements, adoptions and a cult among the family’s story, and Kirkus calls the romance “steamy”.
