Read vs Listen·Verdict last reviewed 23 October 2026·5 min read
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

Short answer: for The Love Hypothesis audiobook vs book choice, we say either works (50% confidence, close call). The Little, Brown audiobook is read by Callie Dalton and Teddy Hamilton and runs 11 hours 51 minutes, unabridged, with a bonus chapter from Adam’s point of view. No criterion could be confirmed on either side, so neither format is favoured. The hypotheses that open each chapter may work better in print, but that rests on one source.

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

No criteria point to reading
–
Jumping timelinesIt is a fake-dating plot told in order.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorThere is one main viewpoint (Olive) plus one bonus chapter from Adam.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThe chapter-opening hypotheses are a short heading device and do not carry the plot.

–

–
Narration criticisedAudible listeners rate the performance 4.65 from 12,443 ratings (UK and US pooled), and no named critic criticises it.

What this book actually is

The Love Hypothesis is Ali Hazelwood’s romance, published by Berkley in the US on 14 September 2021 and by Sphere, part of Little, Brown, as a UK paperback original. It began in 2018 as Star Wars fan fiction, with the leads renamed Olive and Adam for print. It placed second in the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards for Romance, behind Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation.

Olive, a PhD student, kisses Adam Carlsen, a young professor, to convince her best friend she is dating, and the pretence turns into a fake relationship. The book runs to a prologue, 20 chapters and an epilogue, stays with Olive throughout and includes an on-page sex scene. A Prime Video film starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, directed by Claire Scanlon, came out on 23 September 2026, and a sequel, The Two-Body Problem, is due on 2 February 2027.

The case for reading it

The case for print is narrow. Each chapter reportedly opens with a hypothesis about Olive’s love life or choices, a running joke that frames what follows. That detail comes from one source, and we could not confirm how the printed book sets out those lines. If they are set apart in print, a reader takes each one in at a glance before the chapter starts.

Otherwise print offers little that the audiobook lacks. There is one timeline, one point of view and a small cast. Anyone who finds the narration robotic after a sample, as several Audible UK listeners did, has a simple fix in the Kindle edition, 393 pages in the Sphere paperback (Open Library lists 384).

The case for listening to it

The book suits listening. It has one fake-dating plot, told in order from Olive’s point of view, with no flashbacks and no long list of names to remember. Library Journal credits Dalton’s narration with bringing “wide-eyed Olive to awkward life”, her voice “warm and full of humor”.

The Little, Brown audiobook also includes something extra: a bonus chapter from Adam’s point of view, the only part of the book not told by Olive. Listeners rate the book 4.4 on Audible UK and 4.6 on Audible US, as of October 2026.

The audiobook in detail

There are two Audible listings, both 11 hours 51 minutes, unabridged, and both crediting Callie Dalton and Teddy Hamilton: Penguin Audio’s, released on 14 September 2021, and Little, Brown Book Group’s, released on 30 September 2021. Both are sold on both stores, and whether they are the same recording is not confirmed. We score the Little, Brown edition as the newer of two equal productions and the only one Hachette UK confirms includes the Adam bonus chapter. At 1.5x it takes 7 hours 54 minutes, at 2x about 5 hours 56 minutes.

Two narrators are credited, but no publisher source says who reads which part. Listeners report that Hamilton’s voice first appears in the bonus chapter; until a credit list confirms it, we do not count the second narrator as casting. Library Journal also lists a Books on Tape library edition, at 11 hours 9 minutes.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards the Kindle edition if you want to see each chapter’s hypothesis as it is set out in print, or if you try a sample and do not take to the narration.

Lean towards audio if you are coming to the book from the film and want the full story quickly: it runs just under six hours at 2x. The plot is one fake-dating story told in order, from Olive’s point of view, with no flashbacks and no long list of names to remember.
