Literary or dense proseWBUR’s review calls the writing lyrical and luminous, with ‘many individual sentences that glow like small gems’.
–

–
Three or more points of view, one narratorIt has one first-person narrator.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThere are no maps, footnotes or documents, and the switch to ‘you’ is clear from the words alone.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThe names are ordinary, and no source reports confusion.
–

What this book actually is

Heart the Lover is Lily King’s novel of a college romance and its long aftermath, published in the US by Grove Press on 30 September 2025 and in the UK by Canongate on 16 October 2025. It comes in three parts: college in the late 1980s, 21 years later, and about five years after that, all in the present tense. The narrator tells it in the first person, and Part II is addressed to Yash in the second person. The title is the friends’ name for the King of Hearts in a card game they play.

It is connected to King’s earlier novel Writers & Lovers (2020). NPR calls it “both a prequel and a sequel”, and it reads on its own. It was shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction, was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and was longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award.

The case for reading it

The best argument for print is Part II. The novel is in the first person until then. Then it switches to “you”, addressed to one character, Yash. In print you see the shift at once, and you can flick back to where it began. The book also opens with the line “You knew I’d write a book about you someday.” Sources disagree on whether that is the start of the story or a standalone epigram, and print settles it at a glance.

There is front and back matter worth having, too: an epigraph from Céline and an author’s note, which audiobooks do not always include. Whether this one reads them aloud is not stated. At 256 pages, it is also a quick read.

The case for listening to it

Everything about the book’s structure suits audio. One woman tells it, in order, across three parts, all in the present tense. There are no alternating timelines, no rotating narrators and nothing printed that you need to see.

The recording is well reviewed, too. Kirkus says Rebecca Lowman “is at her shape-shifting best as she matches her tone, pace, and timing to each character.” As of October 2026 it has more than 4,000 ratings on Audible US. And it is short: 5 hours 51 minutes, which is under three hours at 2x.

The audiobook in detail

Canongate published the UK audiobook on 16 October 2025, the same day as the hardback, at 5 hours 51 minutes, unabridged: 3 hours 54 minutes at 1.5x and about 2 hours 56 minutes at 2x. Simon & Schuster Audio published the US edition on 30 September 2025 at 5 hours 52 minutes, also read by Lowman. Whether Canongate licensed the US recording or made its own is not stated.

If you like Lowman’s voice, she also reads Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, which runs 13 hours 47 minutes, and our checks gave that book the opposite verdict. Whether this recording includes the epigraph, the dedication or the part headings is not stated.

Who should ignore this verdict

Readers who want to watch the switch to “you” happen in print, or reread the part where it begins. Fans of Writers & Lovers who want to catch every link between the two books, which is easier with a searchable Kindle. And anyone who wants the epigraph and the author’s note, which may not be in the recording.
