What this book actually is
Ordinary Love is Marie Rutkoski’s novel, first published in June 2025 by Knopf in the US and Virago in the UK, with paperbacks following in May 2026; it is not a 2026 novel, whatever the search listings suggest. It was a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2025 in the Romance category, and Virago leads with it as a literary title; it sits on the literary fiction shelf here, with the romance shelf as its near neighbour.
Emily is married to Jack, in a marriage critics describe as controlling, when she meets Gen, the first love she left behind as a teenager. Kirkus says the novel leaps between the present day and points across Emily’s life. The Observer calls it “beautifully written”; Publishers Weekly, “stunning prose”; the Guardian found it zipped along without much of Gen’s inner life. The Virago paperback names Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Normal People as comparisons, both read verdicts on this site. It shares its title with a 2019 film starring Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson, which is unrelated.
The case for reading it
The case for print is the timeline. Kirkus says the novel “leaps between the present day and various points in Emily’s life”, and that is the structure that most often sends a book to print here, because in print a dated or labelled heading is easy to check, and a solo narrator cannot switch to a different voice. The difficulty is that nobody says how the jumps are marked: whether past sections are headed by year, grouped into labelled parts or run straight on. Without that, the advantage of print is likely but unproven.
The prose is the second reason. Publishers Weekly calls it “stunning”, the Observer “beautifully written”, Kirkus “finely written”; the Guardian is less taken. Readers who come to Marie Rutkoski for her sentences can choose the Kindle edition, 368 pages in the Virago paperback.
The case for listening to it
The book has one protagonist and one love story, and one narrator reads it. Rebecca Lowman reads it solo. She also reads Heart the Lover and Yesteryear, which have one read verdict and one listen verdict on this site, so this verdict rests on this book’s structure rather than on her name. The Guardian says the plot “zipped along”; early listeners rate it 4.6 on Audible UK and 4.4 on Audible US, from small numbers, as of October 2026.
The novel is centred on Emily, with little of Gen’s interior life, so one narrator suits it. Nothing in the printed book, such as letters, texts or documents, is confirmed to matter to the story, and the cast is small with ordinary names. Whether the time jumps trouble a listener is the only open question, and it cuts both ways: no reviewer complained about losing their place.
The audiobook in detail
Each store sells two listings of Rebecca Lowman’s reading: Little, Brown Audio, which leads Audible UK and is scored here, and Random House Audio, which leads Audible US, both 12 hours 44 minutes, unabridged, both 2025. Whether they are one recording or two is not confirmed. Hachette Australia’s page says ten hours; the Audible figure is used. At 1.5x it takes about 8 hours 29 minutes, at 2x 6 hours 22 minutes.
No critic review of the narration was found and no award. Searching the bare title is unhelpful: page one for “Ordinary Love audiobook” belongs to Hinge’s free No Ordinary Love and to the 2019 film, and Audible UK surfaces Italian and Spanish mirror pages before the English listing, so search with Rutkoski’s name.
Who should ignore this verdict
Listen if you want one voice for one protagonist. Rebecca Lowman reads it solo, the cast is small with ordinary names, and the Guardian says the plot “zipped along”. Early listeners rate it 4.6 on Audible UK and 4.4 on Audible US, from small numbers, as of October 2026.
Listen too if the jumps in time do not worry you. No reviewer complained about losing their place, and nothing in the printed book, such as letters, texts or documents, is confirmed to matter to the story. Anyone who liked Rebecca Lowman on Heart the Lover will be comfortable here.
