What this book actually is
It is John Green's first novel for adults, and his first new novel since Turtles All the Way Down in 2017. It came out on 22 September 2026 from Dutton in the United States and Penguin in the UK. Two rising actors, Kai Laramie and Juniper Castillo, are cast in a biopic called Andy Warhol Never Gets Old, about the last year of Warhol's life, and the book follows them from the shoot to the premiere and into the publicity that comes after. Green shared an early version in a series of semi-secret livestreams during the pandemic.
Page counts depend on the edition. The hardbacks in both countries run to 304 pages, the US ebook to 368 and the US large print, due in November, to 416.
The case for reading it
The argument for print here is thin, and it is fair to say so. Most of it rests on structural detail that only one source reports: a fourth part made of six chapters headed DAY 1 to DAY 6, and a third part that gives up on scenes for an unbroken run of press-junket talking points, phrases repeated until they stop meaning anything. If the printed book sets those out so that you can take them in at a glance, a recording has to find another way to present them.
The same reviewer says a few passages read like the biography Juniper is holding rather than her own thoughts. Print can mark that kind of shift, while a narrator's voice may make it less clear. Juniper is described as a compulsive note-taker with a journal of character notes, though whether any of that journal is reproduced in print is not documented. And because Slate says Kai has most of the book, readers who like to see exactly whose turn it is will have the chapter breaks in front of them.
The case for listening to it
The book is about two young actors talking, performing and being interviewed, and the recording gives it three readers rather than one. Green told Kirkus he does not usually try to put his finger on the scales over casting, but that with Julia Whelan he asked whether there was any way they could get her, and they did. Whelan has narrated more than 700 audiobooks, Educated among them. Zachary Chastain is newer to it, and performed one character's chapters in Richard Russo's Under the Falls this summer.
The audiobook also ends with something print does not have: a conversation between Green and both narrators about how the audiobook was cast and how they relate to the story. There is little to lose track of in the structure: two characters, a story that moves in one direction and no invented vocabulary. Reader reviews located so far are positive about the format, one calling the choice of audio a smart decision.
The audiobook in detail
Listening Library published the US audio on 22 September 2026, unabridged, at 8 hours 41 minutes, which is about 5 hours 47 minutes at one and a half times speed. Penguin published the UK edition the same day at 521 minutes, with the same three readers credited. Books on Tape handles the library edition.
The publishers have not said how the reading is split between the narrators. Giving one lead narrator to each of the two characters is the obvious way to cast a book like this, but no publisher states that it was done, and nobody has said whether Green reads part of the novel or appears only in the bonus conversation. The Audible UK pages did not show a length or release date when checked.
Who should ignore this verdict
Lean towards print if you want to see the press-tour section and the DAY 1 to DAY 6 chapters as the author laid them out. One review reports them, and nobody has confirmed how they look in print, so the printed book may show something the audiobook cannot.
Lean towards the audiobook if the three readers appeal. Julia Whelan and Zachary Chastain are credited, and the recording ends with a conversation between Green and both narrators about how it was cast, which is not in print.
Book groups may prefer print, where a page number is easier to share than a timestamp.
