What this book actually is

The Hunger Games is the first book of Suzanne Collins' original trilogy, first published in 2008 and now a 464-page Scholastic paperback in the UK. Counting the two prequels, it is third in story order. The second prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, reaches UK cinemas on 20 November 2026.

It is narrated by Katniss Everdeen in the first person and present tense. It opens on reaping day in District 12 and then runs in order, across three parts titled “The Tributes”, “The Games” and “The Victor” and 27 chapters. Its world vocabulary is small: Panem, the Capitol, the districts, the reaping and the tributes.

The case for reading it

The real case for print is speed and a choice of editions. With a word count of 99,750, a reader at 238 words a minute gets through it in about 7 hours, more than three and a half hours quicker than the recording at normal speed. Scholastic UK also lists a Deluxe edition and an Illustrated Edition, for anyone who wants the book as an object.

The printed book has a couple of small devices: the three part titles, and a lullaby Katniss sings that is quoted as lyrics. How those lyrics are set out, and in which chapter, is not documented. Nothing else, such as maps, letters or lists, has been reported.

The case for listening to it

The structure of the book suits audio very well. It has one narrator and one point of view, and the story starts on reaping day and runs in order without going back. If your attention drifts for a moment, the structure does not leave you lost.

Tatiana Maslany's recording is the one on Audible today. Listener reviews on Audible UK praise her “great changing between the characters” and say she has “a wonderful ability to make you forget that she is the one reading”. She also reads Catching Fire and Mockingjay, so you can stay with the same voice for the whole trilogy.

The audiobook in detail

Scholastic released Maslany's unabridged Special Edition on 30 October 2018. It runs 10 hours 35 minutes, which is 7 hours 3 minutes at 1.5x and 5 hours 17 minutes at 2x. It includes a bonus Q&A track with Maslany, and Audible UK lists an accompanying PDF. Whether she sings the lullaby or reads it is not documented.

It replaced an earlier recording read by Carolyn McCormick in 2008, which is no longer sold on Audible. Maslany's other audio work includes the full-cast Locke & Key. The recording is rated 4.9 from 3,444 ratings on Audible UK at the time of writing.

Who should ignore this verdict

Anyone catching up before the Sunrise on the Reaping film who reads quickly: about 7 hours of reading is quicker than 10 and a half hours of listening at normal speed. Collectors who want the Illustrated Edition. And readers who want to see the lullaby's lyrics in print rather than hear them.
