Reading order
Read the first trilogy in order. Mistborn: Secret History runs alongside it and assumes you know it, so read it after The Hero of Ages; Audible numbers it 3.5. Then come the Wax and Wayne books, set long after the trilogy with new leads.
- Mistborn: The Final Empire (2006)
- The Well of Ascension (2007)
- The Hero of Ages (2008)
- Mistborn: Secret History (novella, 2016)
- The Alloy of Law (2011)
- Shadows of Self (2015)
- The Bands of Mourning (2016)
- The Lost Metal (2022)
Two short stories, The Eleventh Metal and Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, are optional. On audio they are only in Arcanum Unbounded, read by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. A third era, set in an early computer age, is projected from December 2028, with no title announced.
Which recording?
Michael Kramer reads every Mistborn novel and Secret History, so you never change voice between books. Audible UK sells the Gollancz recordings, and these are the ones the verdicts score. Audible US also sells Macmillan Audio listings, read by Kramer too, which run about 20 minutes shorter for each book of the trilogy.
GraphicAudio has made full-cast dramatisations of every book except The Lost Metal. They are adaptations rather than the full text and aren’t on Audible UK, so they are not scored.

How these verdicts were reached
Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions, set in advance and applied identically to every title. They are based on research into what readers and listeners generally find easier to follow in each format, not on personal preference, and they are published in full so you can check the reasoning yourself. Verdicts are never paid for, sponsored or influenced by affiliate partners.
- The criteria: read the thirteen questions in full.
- What we checked: the Audible UK and US listings for each recording, the UK Gollancz paperbacks for page counts, Wikipedia, Coppermind and Books of Brilliance.
