Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two criteria point to listening
✓
Single point of view and narratorBookBrowse (Kim Kovacs) says it is “told in a third-person voice entirely from Bagger’s point of view”, and one narrator reads it all.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationKirkus, reviewing the audiobook (22 January 2026), calls it “a masterful performance well suited to the unconventional story”.
–
Full cast or produced audioKirby Heyborne reads it on his own, with no cast or music listed, on all three editions.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, read by a narrator rather than the author.
–
Long book304 pages in the UK Titan Books and US Atria editions, under 400.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectKirkus praises Heyborne’s “talent with accents”, but no source says the text uses dialect or hard names, so it does not count.
One criterion points to reading
✓
Literary or dense proseThe Pulitzer citation calls it “a stylistic tour-de-force”, BookBrowse (Kim Kovacs) calls the approach experimental, and Books, Bones and Buffy found it “a rather exhausting reading experience”.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorThe whole book stays with one soldier (BookBrowse), so there are not three or more viewpoints.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThe book is one long sentence broken into short paragraphs. That is a feature of the prose, not of the page layout, and nothing in the story depends on how it looks.
–
Narration criticisedThe Audible Performance rating is 4.4 from 388 ratings on Audible US, and Kirkus praises the reading.
–
Jumping timelinesNo source describes jumps in time. The plot summaries follow one march near the end of the war, so it does not count.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThe five soldiers are Bagger, Arno, Popkin, Goodspeed and Veck, but no source says the names are easy to confuse, so it does not count.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNo source mentions maps, a family tree or notes, so it does not count. No PDF comes with the audiobook.

What this book actually is

Angel Down is a novel by Daniel Kraus set near the end of the First World War. Private First Class Cyril Bagger and four other soldiers are sent out across the battlefield, and the book stays with Bagger throughout. Kraus wrote it as one long sentence, broken into short paragraphs.

It won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, announced on 4 May 2026, and the citation calls it “a stylistic tour-de-force”. The book depicts wartime deaths “in visceral detail” (Kirkus) and has religious themes. What happens to the angel and to the five soldiers is not covered here.

The case for reading it

The prose is the book’s calling card. The Pulitzer citation praises the style, and BookBrowse calls the approach experimental. On the page you can set your own pace through the long, unbroken sentence and go back over a passage.

Some readers find the form hard going in print: Books, Bones and Buffy called it “a rather exhausting reading experience, to be honest”.

The case for listening to it

The story stays with one soldier, and one narrator reads it, which is easy to follow by ear. Kirkus calls Kirby Heyborne’s reading “a masterful performance well suited to the unconventional story”.

At 8 hours 21 minutes it comes down to about 5 hours 34 minutes at 1.5x.
