House of Flame and Shadow audiobook vs book: which should you choose?

The third and longest Crescent City novel, where the story moves between more characters than ever.

Read vs Listen·Verdict last reviewed 2 November 2026·5 min read
House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas

Short answer: for the House of Flame and Shadow audiobook vs book choice, we say read it on Kindle (79% confidence, leaning). By book 3 the story moves between six characters, sometimes several times in one chapter, and Elizabeth Evans reads all of them, which favours print, as does the printed map. The book’s length favours audio, but the reading side carries far more weight.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Read it on Kindle

As many as six characters share the story, sometimes switching within one chapter, and Elizabeth Evans reads every one of them, which can be hard to follow over audio. On the page you can see each change as it happens, and the print edition has a map.

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two criteria point to reading
✓
Three or more points of view, one narratorRomantasy Realms counts six point-of-view characters and says “Many of the chapters in CC3 had multiple POV shifts, confusing readers.” The Harvard Crimson (Hannah E. Gadway) says the novel “skips between many plotlines and locations”, and Elizabeth Evans reads every one of them.
✓
Maps, family trees or footnotesThe US Bloomsbury hardcover has a map (Deerfield Public Library: “838 pages: map”), and no PDF comes with the audiobook. The Harvard Crimson’s remark that “no map is provided” is about the world-building, not the printed book.
–
Literary or dense proseThe Harvard Crimson calls it “thrilling, sexy, and addictingly page-turning”, and Romantasy Realms criticises info-dumping rather than dense prose.
–
Narration criticisedThe Audible Performance rating is 4.85 from 2,173 ratings on Audible UK and 4.89 from 24,843 on Audible US.
–
Jumping timelinesIt opens “only a couple of days after the climax of the previous book” (Lair of Reviews), and The Catalyst says “the plot in this book takes place over just a few days”. No source reports a story told out of order, so it does not count.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThe US hardcover has colour illustrations on the lining papers (library record), but no source says the story depends on them, so it does not count.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo source says the names sound alike, so it does not count.
One criterion points to listening
✓
Long book848 pages in the UK Bloomsbury paperback and 838 to 848 in the US hardcover, well over 400.
–
Full cast or produced audioElizabeth Evans reads it on her own on Audible UK and US. The GraphicAudio full-cast version is a dramatised adaptation, and adaptations are never scored.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, read by a narrator rather than the author.
–
Single point of view and narratorRomantasy Realms (Ivy Charlotte Dally) counts six point-of-view characters by book 3, so it is not one point of view.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationNo Kirkus or AudioFile review of this audiobook was found, so it does not count.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectLair of Reviews calls it “incredibly lore-heavy”, and Romantasy Realms describes “entire royal bloodlines with history, religion with deities and rites”, but no source says the names are hard to follow, so it does not count.
How the score adds up
Listening 3 points, reading 11

Listening: long book (3), 3 points. Reading: three or more points of view, one narrator (8), maps, family trees or footnotes (3), 11 points. 79% of the confirmed points favour reading, so the verdict is read it on Kindle at 79% confidence (leaning).

What this book actually is

House of Flame and Shadow is the third Crescent City novel by Sarah J. Maas, published on 30 January 2024. The Audible summary finds Bryce stranded in “a strange new world” and Hunt back in the Asteri’s dungeons, and the story picks up only days after book 2 ends (Lair of Reviews).

It is the longest book in the series so far. The Audible summary calls the series “sexy” and “action-packed”, and the book includes violence and imprisonment. How it ends is not covered here. A fourth book is planned but has no title or date (as of November 2026).

The case for reading it

Romantasy Realms counts six point-of-view characters by book 3 and says many chapters switch between them, which confused some readers. The Harvard Crimson says the novel “skips between many plotlines and locations, allotting only a few pages to each scene”. On the page you can see where each switch happens; on audio, one voice reads them all.

The US hardcover has a map, and no PDF comes with the audiobook.

The case for listening to it

At 848 pages it is the longest book in the series, and audio takes it in 29 hours 42 minutes, or about 19 hours 48 minutes at 1.5x.

Listeners rate Elizabeth Evans’s performance 4.89 from 24,843 ratings on Audible US, and she reads the whole series, so the voice stays the same from book 1.

The audiobook in detail

Audible Studios publishes the recording on both stores, read by Elizabeth Evans at 29 hours 42 minutes (30 January 2024). Audible UK lists it twice, with the same narrator, length and publisher; the ratings quoted here come from the listing with more ratings and are a snapshot. Whether the UK and US editions are one recording or two is not confirmed.

GraphicAudio has a full-cast dramatised adaptation in two parts (13 hours 6 minutes, December 2024, and 13 hours 2 minutes, April 2025). It is an adaptation rather than a reading of the full text, so it is not scored. No PDF companion is listed.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards audio if you listened to the first two books with Elizabeth Evans and know the characters well enough to follow the switches by voice. Lean towards print if you want to see each change of character on the page, with the map to hand.
