What this book actually is

The Alchemist is a short novel by the Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho, first published in Portuguese in 1988 and translated into English by Alan R. Clarke. It follows Santiago, a young shepherd from Andalusia, who dreams of treasure and sets out to find it, crossing from Spain to Tangier and into the Sahara.

It is told as a fable in two parts, in a simple tone, and most of the people Santiago meets are known by their role: the crystal merchant, the Englishman, the alchemist. Where the journey ends is not covered here.

The case for reading it

The book is short, at 224 pages in the UK paperback, and the language is plain, so it is easy to read in a sitting or two and to return to favourite passages.

Nothing on the print side could be confirmed: no named source points to timelines, names, layout or notes that the page would help with.

The case for listening to it

Publishers Weekly said “the real treasure here is Jeremy Irons”, and Kirkus calls his narration “unforgettable”. Listeners agree: 4.7 on Audible UK and 4.8 on Audible US, from over 80,000 ratings between them.

At 4 hours it comes down to about 2 hours 40 minutes at 1.5x, about the length of a long film.
