Short answer: for the Threshing Day audiobook vs book choice, we say listen on Audible (100% confidence, clear cut). Fourteen narrators read the 13 stories, which is the single heaviest check for audio. Nothing on the print side could be confirmed, so it comes out clearly in favour of listening.

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One criterion points to listening
✓
Full cast or produced audioAudible UK and US and Blackstone Library list 14 narrators for 13 stories. No source says which narrator reads which story, but the listing confirms multiple narrators, so the full cast check applies.
–
Read by the authorIt is fiction, read by narrators rather than the author.
–
Single point of view and narratorEach of the 13 stories is about a different character (Book Riot; CinemaBlend), so it is not one point of view.
–
Long book224 pages in the UK deluxe hardback, under 400.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationNo Kirkus or AudioFile review of the recording was found, so it does not count.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe world has invented names, but no source says they are hard to follow, so it does not count.
No criteria point to reading
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorSeveral narrators share the stories, so this check, which is about one narrator voicing many viewpoints, does not apply.
–
Narration criticisedThe Audible Performance rating is 4.82 from 836 ratings on Audible UK and 4.84 from 8,866 on Audible US.
–
Jumping timelinesThe stories span ten years, and the one review that describes the order (unnamed) says they run oldest to newest, so it does not count.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThe UK deluxe edition has sixteen full-colour illustrations by Joe Requeza (Waterstones), but no source says the stories depend on them, so it does not count.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo source says the names are confusing, so it does not count.
–
Literary or dense proseNo source comments on the prose, so it does not count.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNo source says this book has a map or notes, and no PDF comes with the audiobook, so it does not count.

What this book actually is

Threshing Day is a collection of 13 short stories by Rebecca Yarros, set in the world of Fourth Wing. Each story follows a different rider on their Threshing Day, the day they bond with a dragon, across about ten years of the Empyrean world.

Book Riot calls it a “drop-in addition to the universe” rather than a sequel, and CinemaBlend suggests reading it after the three Empyrean novels. Who features in each story is not covered here. Like the series, it has violence and death in a war-college setting.

The case for reading it

The UK deluxe hardback has sixteen full-colour illustrations by Joe Requeza, one of each dragon according to CinemaBlend. The audiobook cannot give you those, though no source says the stories depend on them.

At 224 pages it is short in print, and easy to dip into one story at a time.

The case for listening to it

Fourteen narrators share the 13 stories, including Teddy Hamilton, who reads Xaden in the main series. With each story about a different rider, a change of voice helps you know where you are.

Listeners rate it 4.82 on Audible UK and 4.84 on Audible US. At 5 hours 52 minutes it comes down to about 3 hours 55 minutes at 1.5x.

The audiobook in detail

Recorded Books publishes the unabridged recording on both Audible UK and Audible US (29 September 2026), with a cast of 14 narrators, at 5 hours 52 minutes. Which narrator reads which story is not confirmed.

GraphicAudio sells a separate dramatised adaptation with its own full cast (13 October 2026). No PDF companion is listed for either.

Who should ignore this verdict

Lean towards print if the deluxe edition’s dragon illustrations are part of why you want the book. Lean towards audio if you want a different voice for each rider.
