What this book actually is

Yellowface is R.F. Kuang’s novel about June Hayward, a failed writer who takes the final manuscript of her rival Athena Liu, a celebrated novelist, after Athena dies in a freak accident, and publishes it under her own name. It is a satire of the publishing industry and of online book culture.

June tells the whole story herself, and much of it plays out through social media, reviews and the reaction to her success. How it ends is not covered here.

The case for reading it

Print lets you take June’s voice at your own pace and linger over the tweets and Goodreads posts that run through the plot. Kirkus says the book “feels so much like a social media feed”. No source confirms how those posts are set out in the printed book, so this does not count towards reading in the score.

The case for listening to it

It is one narrator’s story, told in order, and Helen Laser reads all of it. The recording won an AudioFile Earphones Award and was a Fiction finalist at the 2024 Audie Awards.

At 8 hours 38 minutes, it is about 5 hours 45 minutes at 1.5x.
