The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two checks point to listening
✓

✓
Award-winning or praised narrationAudioFile says “The friendly urgency in Jeff Bottoms’ narration is perfect for this multilayered advice on managing distractions” and “With diction that sounds both classy and conversational, he communicates like a helpful friend.” Advice read like that is easy to take in by ear.

How the score adds up
Listening 13 points, reading 0

Newport’s single argument read by one narrator (7) and praised narration (6) give listening 13 points, and none of the reading checks scores. That puts it at 76%, leaning to audio. Nothing scores for reading, but a clear-cut verdict needs more than 13 points on one side.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 6 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Deep Work is Cal Newport’s 2016 book arguing that the ability to focus without distraction on demanding work is becoming both rare and valuable. Part 1, The Idea, makes the case in three chapters; Part 2, The Rules, sets out four: Work Deeply, Embrace Boredom, Quit Social Media and Drain the Shallows.

Newport tells stories along the way, such as Carl Jung building a stone tower to focus. Publishers Weekly called it a “strong self-help book”, and the New York Times Book Review said “As a presence on the page, Newport is exceptional in the realm of self-help authors”.

The case for reading it

The case for print is the back of the book. The US hardback has 24 pages of endnotes and an index, so on the page you can check Newport’s sources and find a rule again quickly. No PDF is listed with the audiobook.

The four rules are set out as chapters, which makes a paperback or Kindle copy handy if you want to return to the one you are working on. The Wall Street Journal calls it “Engaging and substantive” rather than heavy going, so print is about reference, not difficulty.

The case for listening to it

Jeff Bottoms’ reading is the reason to listen. AudioFile says “The friendly urgency in Jeff Bottoms’ narration is perfect for this multilayered advice on managing distractions” and that “he communicates like a helpful friend”. For a book that asks you to change how you work, a reader who sounds on your side helps the advice land.

It’s Cal Newport’s argument from start to finish: why deep work matters, then four rules. There is no plot or cast, and the chapters are all prose, so nothing is lost by ear. Listeners rate the performance 4.50 on Audible UK and 4.58 on Audible US.

The audiobook in detail

Jeff Bottoms reads the whole book alone; Cal Newport does not narrate it. The Little, Brown recording runs 7 hours 44 minutes, unabridged, and was released in the UK on 26 July 2016. Grand Central Publishing sells the same recording on Audible US, dated 5 January 2016.

AudioFile praises his “friendly urgency”. No award was found, there is no other English recording, and no PDF is listed with the audiobook.
