What this book actually is

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is Barbara Robinson’s comic Christmas story, first published as a book in 1972. The six Herdman children, the worst-behaved in town, take every lead part in the church nativity play, and Beth Bradley tells what happens. How the pageant ends is not covered here.

The 2024 film, directed by Dallas Jenkins, stars Judy Greer and Pete Holmes, with Lauren Graham as the grown-up Beth narrating. It is listed for Netflix in the US from 1 November 2026. A UK date is not confirmed.

For parents: the Herdman children smoke cigars in the book, and the 2024 film is rated PG for brief underage smoking.

The case for reading it

At 80 pages in the US paperback it is a one-sitting read, short enough to read aloud over a couple of evenings. Nothing in the book’s layout is lost on audio, so the choice is about time and who is listening.

No UK print edition was found on 29 October 2026, so a paper copy in the UK means a US edition.

The case for listening to it

The whole story comes through one child watching it happen, and one reader keeps that single voice intact.

Elaine Stritch’s recording runs 1 hour 26 minutes, about 57 minutes at 1.5x, so it works as a single family listen on a car journey.

The audiobook in detail

HarperCollins publishes Elaine Stritch’s unabridged recording at 1 hour 26 minutes (2 December 2005). It is the only recording on Audible UK, and it is also on Audible US, where it had a Performance rating of 4.66 from 783 ratings on 29 October 2026.

Audible US also sells C. J. Critt’s unabridged recording for Recorded Books, at 1 hour 52 minutes (20 November 2012), rated 4.67 from 1,589. Both are single narrators; Stritch is scored because she is a well-known stage and screen actor and is on both stores. No PDF companion is listed.
