Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One criterion points to listening
✓
Full cast or produced audioTwo narrators, one for each viewpoint. The Caffeinated Reviewer (Kimberly, 2 November 2026): “Julia’s present-day point of view narrated by Marin Ireland” and “Caroline’s chapters were narrated by Saskia Maarleveld”.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, read by narrators rather than the author.
–
Single point of view and narratorThe AU Review (Annie Mills, 22 October 2026) says it is “told through two viewpoints”, with two narrators, so it is not a single point of view.
–
Long book320 pages in the UK paperback and 356 in the US hardcover, under 400.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationThe Caffeinated Reviewer, a book blog rather than a critic, calls the narrators “outstanding”. No Kirkus or AudioFile review was found, so it does not count.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe AU Review notes subtle differences in the prose and dialogue of the 1692 strand, but that is not a statement about dialect or hard names, so it does not count.
One criterion points to reading
✓
Jumping timelinesBookishelf: “Every time one strand reaches a hinge, the book cuts to the other century.” Liz Nugent: “Half of the book is set in 1692.”
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorTwo viewpoints, each with its own narrator, so the check does not apply.
–
Literary or dense proseThe AU Review calls Julia’s strand “at times rather basic and on-the-nose with its exposition”, and Bookishelf says the chapters are mostly three or four pages long.
–
Narration criticisedThe Performance rating is 4.65 from 561 ratings on Audible UK and 4.57 from 7,375 on Audible US.
–
Story depends on images or layoutBookishelf says one reveal depends on an object the reader has been looking at since chapter four, but no source says it is shown on the page, so it does not count.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo source says the names are confusing, so it does not count.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesThe plot turns on family history, but no source says a family tree is printed and no PDF was found, so it does not count.
How the score adds up
Listening 10 points, reading 8

Listening: full cast or produced audio (10), 10 points. Reading: jumping timelines (8), 8 points. 56% of the confirmed points favour listening, so the verdict is listen on Audible at 56% confidence (close call).

What this book actually is

The Witch is a standalone thriller by Freida McFadden, told through two viewpoints. Julia lives in the present day in a Massachusetts house where, in 1692, a young woman called Caroline was accused of witchcraft. The chapters alternate between the two.

It reached number 3 in the UK top 10 in the week ending 10 October 2026. Content includes execution, strangulation, threatened sexual violence, gun violence, dementia, elder neglect and medical horror. Neither of the book’s reveals is covered here.

The case for reading it

The book cuts between the present day and 1692 at each turning point, and in print the switch is easy to see.

The chapters are short, mostly three or four pages, so it is quick to read too.

The case for listening to it

Marin Ireland reads Julia’s present-day chapters and Saskia Maarleveld reads Caroline’s chapters set in 1692, according to The Caffeinated Reviewer, so each century has its own voice.

Listeners rate the performance 4.65 on Audible UK and 4.57 from over 7,000 ratings on Audible US. At 9 hours 31 minutes it comes down to about 6 hours 21 minutes at 1.5x.

The audiobook in detail

Dreamscape Media publishes the recording on both stores at 9 hours 31 minutes, unabridged, read by Marin Ireland and Saskia Maarleveld.

The split of one narrator per viewpoint comes from one named review, not from the publisher. No PDF companion was found.
