The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt: audiobook vs book, which should you choose?

A boy survives a museum bombing that kills his mother and walks out with a small Dutch painting. Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer winner is long, and its award-winning audiobook makes the case for listening.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Three checks point to listening
✓
Single point of view and narrator“Everything is told from twenty-seven-year-old Theo’s point of view” (SparkNotes), in the first person. It is Theo’s story in his own words, and one narrator suits it.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationDavid Pittu’s reading won two 2014 Audie Awards, for Literary Fiction and for Solo Narration, Male (File 770). Kirkus says the story is “fully realized by the gifted Pittu”, and BookPage calls him “superb”.
✓
Long book864 pages in the UK Abacus paperback. A book that size is easier to finish when you can listen on the move.
One check points to reading
✓
Literary or dense proseThe Pulitzer citation calls it “A beautifully written coming-of-age novel with exquisitely drawn characters”, and Elaine Showalter praises “total immersion in Tartt’s vision and voice”. Prose that rich rewards slow reading on the page, though James Wood in The New Yorker was less impressed.
Checked, not a factor here (9)
–
Full cast or produced audioDavid Pittu reads it alone, on both Audible UK and US.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, so the author-reading check doesn’t apply.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectBoris is Ukrainian, but we found no review describing his accent or the foreign words on the page.
–
Jumping timelinesIt opens in Amsterdam, then most of the novel is one long flashback told in order (SparkNotes), so it doesn’t jump back and forth.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorOne point of view, Theo’s.
–
Story depends on images or layoutThere are no illustrations or special layout. The painting is described in words.
–
Narration criticisedPerformance 4.68 from 5,823 ratings on Audible UK and 4.65 from 38,764 on Audible US, and no named critic criticises the reading.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThe main names are easy to tell apart.
–

How the score adds up
Listening 16 points, reading 7

One storyteller with one narrator (7), award-winning narration (6) and the book’s length (3) give listening 16 points, while the praised prose (7) gives reading 7. That puts it at 68%, leaning to audio.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 5 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

The Goldfinch is Donna Tartt’s third novel. Theo Decker is 13 when he survives a bomb at a New York museum that kills his mother, and he keeps a small Dutch painting from the wreckage. He tells the whole story himself, looking back from Amsterdam at 27.

It won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. John Crowley’s film, with Ansel Elgort and Oakes Fegley as Theo, came out in 2019.

The case for reading it

The prose is the reason to read. The Pulitzer citation calls it “A beautifully written coming-of-age novel”, and long, detailed passages on art, antiques and New York reward a slower pace on the page, where you can reread a sentence.

Not every critic agrees: James Wood in The New Yorker found the tone closer to children’s literature. If you want to judge the style for yourself, print gives you the time to do it.

The case for listening to it

David Pittu’s reading won two 2014 Audie Awards, and Kirkus says the story is “fully realized by the gifted Pittu”. It is Theo’s story, told by him alone, and one narrator suits that close first-person voice.

At 864 pages it is a very long book, and the audiobook lets you get through it on commutes and walks rather than in one long stretch with the book.

The audiobook in detail

David Pittu reads the whole book alone in 32 hours 25 minutes, unabridged. The Little, Brown recording came out on 22 October 2013 and is the same on Audible UK and US.

It won the 2014 Audie Awards for Literary Fiction and for Solo Narration, Male. Listeners rate the performance 4.68 on Audible UK and 4.65 from nearly 39,000 ratings on Audible US.

Who should ignore this verdict

If you read Tartt for her sentences, choose print: the praised prose is the one strong reason on that side. Otherwise, Pittu’s award-winning reading makes the audiobook the better way through a book this long.
