Beach Read by Emily Henry: audiobook vs book, which should you choose?

Emily Henry’s first rom-com for adults: two rival writers in neighbouring lake houses bet each other they can write in the other’s genre for a summer. It’s January’s story, and her narrator makes it one to hear.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Listen on Audible

Listen to Beach Read by Emily Henry: Julia Whelan’s reading was among AudioFile’s June 2020 Earphones Award winners. AudioFile says she ‘perfectly captures January’s defensiveness’ and gives Gus ‘a deep, gruff voice suited to his brooding personality’. January tells the whole story in the first person, so one narrator suits it, and Whelan reads every English-language Emily Henry audiobook, so fans get a familiar voice.

Julia Whelan reads both listings, at the same length. The UK listing came out a day earlier, so it is the one scored. The 2025 UK collector’s edition hardback adds a new introduction and a bonus epilogue, “The Layover”; nothing we found says the audiobook includes them.

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two checks point to listening
✓
Single point of view and narratorAudioFile, via BookTrib: ‘Narrator Julia Whelan inhabits the first-person point of view of January Andrews.’ It’s January’s story from start to finish, so a single narrator fits it naturally.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationAudioFile says ‘Whelan perfectly captures January’s defensiveness, which soon gives way to laughter and yearning’, and that she gives Gus ‘a deep, gruff voice suited to his brooding personality’. BookTrib lists it among AudioFile’s June 2020 Earphones Award winners.

How the score adds up
Listening 13 points, reading 0

January’s single viewpoint read by one narrator (7 points) and award-winning narration (6) give listening 13, and nothing scores for reading. That puts it at 76%, leaning to audio. A clear-cut verdict needs more than 13 points on one side.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 4 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Beach Read is Emily Henry’s 2020 romantic comedy. January Andrews writes romance but no longer believes in love. She spends the summer in a Michigan lake house next door to Augustus “Gus” Everett, a literary writer and her old college rival, and they bet each other they can write a book in the other’s genre.

January is grieving her father and dealing with what she has learned about him, and Kirkus notes “more than enough steamy scenes” and smart commentary on mental health. 20th Century Studios is making the film, directed by Yulin Kuang, with Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger, due in cinemas on 7 May 2027.

The case for reading it

There’s not much in the book itself that favours print. It’s one summer, told in order by January, with no maps, documents or layouts you’d miss on audio.

The real reason to buy print is the 2025 UK collector’s edition hardback, which adds a new introduction and a bonus epilogue that the 2020 recording doesn’t have.

The case for listening to it

January tells the whole story in the first person, and Julia Whelan reads all of it. AudioFile says she ‘inhabits the first-person point of view of January Andrews’, which is what makes a single-narrator rom-com work.

The performance is the draw. AudioFile says she ‘perfectly captures January’s defensiveness’ and gives Gus a deep, gruff voice, so the banter between the rivals lands, and the audiobook was among AudioFile’s June 2020 Earphones Award winners (BookTrib).

The audiobook in detail

Julia Whelan reads every English-language Emily Henry audiobook on Audible UK and US. Beach Read runs 10 hours 13 minutes, unabridged, from Penguin Audio. Listeners rate the performance 4.52 from 770 ratings on Audible UK and 4.72 from 14,053 on Audible US.

There’s no full-cast or duet version and no PDF. The recording dates from 2020, before the collector’s edition epilogue.

Who should ignore this verdict

Get the hardback if you want the bonus epilogue from the 2025 collector’s edition.

If you’d prefer a separate voice actor for Gus, note that Whelan reads both leads herself.
