Book Lovers by Emily Henry: audiobook vs book, which should you choose?

A New York literary agent spends a month in a small North Carolina town and keeps running into the book editor she can’t stand. It’s a book built on sparring dialogue, and that’s why the audiobook wins.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Listen on Audible

Listen to Book Lovers by Emily Henry: Julia Whelan’s timing is the reason. AudioFile says she ‘conveys all of the rapid-fire insults and the flirty banter perfectly’, and the sparring between Nora and Charlie is what the book runs on. Nora tells the whole story herself, so one narrator suits it, and the month in Sunshine Falls runs in order, so it’s easy to pick up and put down.

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Two checks point to listening
✓
Single point of view and narratorNora tells the story in the first person, and Thunder Bay Public Library’s staff review refers to ‘Nora’s narration’. It’s her story in her voice, so one narrator reading all of it fits.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationAudioFile calls Whelan’s performance ‘dynamic’ and says she ‘excels at character portrayals’, and in a review quoted by Literary Hub adds that she ‘conveys all of the rapid-fire insults and the flirty banter perfectly’. In a book driven by banter, that delivery is what you’re listening for.

How the score adds up
Listening 13 points, reading 0

Nora’s first-person story read by one narrator (7 points) and AudioFile’s praise for Whelan (6 points) give listening 13. That puts it at 76%, leaning to audio. Nothing scores for reading, but a clear-cut verdict needs more than 13 points on one side.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 5 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Book Lovers is Emily Henry’s 2022 romantic comedy. Nora Stephens, a sharp New York literary agent, agrees to spend a month in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, with her sister, Libby, and keeps running into Charlie Lastra, a book editor and her professional rival.

It is a standalone. Nora is grieving her mother in the background, and Kirkus calls the romance “swoonworthy and steam-filled”. The film rights went to Tango Entertainment in 2023, with Sarah Heyward writing the script.

The case for reading it

There isn’t much of a case for print. The story covers one month in order, the cast is small, and nothing depends on how the page looks. Choose the 384-page paperback if you like to savour the bookish in-jokes at your own pace.

The case for listening to it

The banter is the reason to listen. AudioFile says Whelan ‘conveys all of the rapid-fire insults and the flirty banter perfectly’ and ‘excels at character portrayals’, and the back-and-forth between Nora and Charlie is what drives the book.

Nora tells the whole thing herself, so a single narrator keeps you in her head, and with one month told in order you can dip in and out without losing your place.

The audiobook in detail

Julia Whelan reads it solo and unabridged for Penguin Audio, in 11 hours 23 minutes on both Audible UK and US. She reads every English-language Emily Henry audiobook on both stores. There’s no full-cast or duet version, and no PDF.

Who should ignore this verdict

If you want a separate male voice for Charlie, this isn’t that: Whelan reads everyone. And if you always read rom-coms on the page, nothing in this one argues against it.
