Death on the Nile audiobook vs book: which should you choose?

Poirot is aboard a Nile steamer when a young heiress is shot on her honeymoon cruise. Nothing tips this one: a well-rated Branagh reading on one side, a crowded cast on the other.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Either works

Either works for Death on the Nile, so pick the format you enjoy. Kenneth Branagh, who played Poirot in the 2022 film, reads the whole book, and listeners rate his performance 4.81 on both Audible stores. Kenneth Branagh (2020) and David Suchet (2006) both read the full text alone, so the newer recording, Branagh’s, is the one scored. The US listing has the same narrator and length.

Kirkus praises Suchet’s reading, which is also on Audible. The BBC full-cast version with John Moffatt (2h 14m) is a dramatisation, so it isn’t scored, and a learners’ edition is abridged. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

None of the thirteen checks clearly applies to this book, so neither format has the edge.

Checked, not a factor here (13)
–
Jumping timelinesChris Parkle calls the opening “a series of snapshots, all roughly happening at the same time”, and the story then runs forward.
–
Narration criticisedPerformance 4.81 from 991 ratings on Audible UK and 4.81 from 2,718 on Audible US, and no critic criticises Branagh.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorThe narrator is all-seeing and the cast is large, but we couldn’t find a critic saying the story is told from three or more characters’ points of view.
–
Story depends on images or layoutOne anonymous forum post mentions a sketch, but no edition listing we checked shows a plan of the cabins.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThere are more than twenty named characters, but no reviewer says the names are hard to tell apart.
–
Literary or dense proseCritics praise the plot rather than the prose: the Daily Mail said “The construction is flawless”.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNo publisher, retailer or library listing we checked describes a map or plan, and no PDF comes with the audiobook.
–
Full cast or produced audioKenneth Branagh reads it alone. The BBC full-cast version is a 2h 14m dramatisation, so it isn’t scored.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, so the author-reading check doesn’t apply.
–
Single point of view and narratorAn all-seeing narrator moves across more than twenty characters (SuperSummary), so it isn’t one person’s story.
–
Long bookThe UK paperback has 384 pages, under the 400-page line.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationWe found no critic review of Branagh’s reading of this book. Kirkus praises David Suchet’s older recording, and Branagh’s AudioFile award is for Murder on the Orient Express.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe Egyptian place names, such as Shellal, Wadi Halfa and Abu Simbel, are many, but no reviewer comments on hearing them.
How the score adds up
Nothing tips it either way

We looked for the things that make a book easier in one format, such as a full-cast recording, jumping timelines or a layout audio can’t carry, and found none strong enough to count here. That puts it at 50%, an even split, so the choice is about how you like to read: see the two lines in the verdict box.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 6 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Death on the Nile is Agatha Christie’s 1937 Hercule Poirot mystery. The young heiress Linnet Ridgeway is shot during her honeymoon cruise on the Nile steamer Karnak, and Poirot, who is on board, questions the passengers.

The long first chapter, in twelve short sections, introduces more than twenty characters in England, Majorca, New York, a London lawyers’ office and Jerusalem before they all head for Egypt. It was filmed in 1978 with Peter Ustinov and in 2022 by Kenneth Branagh. It includes a shooting, murder and a jilted lover’s threats with a pistol.

The case for reading it

The book opens with twelve short scenes in different places, introducing more than twenty people before they meet on the boat. Chris Parkle calls them “a series of snapshots”, and in print you can turn back to remind yourself who someone is when they reappear on board.

Reviewers in 1937 praised the plotting and the cast: The Scotsman called it “the neatest of plots”, and E. R. Punshon in The Guardian said the minor characters “stand out in the narrative in their own right”. If you like to weigh up the suspects as you go, the page lets you take your time.

The case for listening to it

Kenneth Branagh reads the whole book and played Poirot in the 2022 film, so you hear the detective from an actor who has played him on screen. Listeners rate his performance 4.81 on both Audible UK and US.

Once everyone is aboard, the story mostly runs forward, and at 8 hours 14 minutes it is a manageable listen. We found no critic review of his reading, so the case rests on those listener ratings.

The audiobook in detail

Kenneth Branagh reads the unabridged HarperCollins recording, released on 30 June 2020, in 8 hours 14 minutes. William Morrow sells the same reading at the same length on Audible US.

David Suchet’s older unabridged reading (2006, 8 hours) is also on Audible, and Kirkus says he “brings a perfect Belgian accent to Poirot”. The BBC full-cast version with John Moffatt runs 2 hours 14 minutes and is a dramatisation, not the full novel. No PDF comes with any of them.

Who should ignore this verdict

Neither format has a clear edge. If you want to hear Poirot from the actor who played him on screen, listen to Branagh. If you prefer to keep a big cast in view and turn back, read it.
