The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One check points to listening
✓
Full cast or produced audioThe Online Stage recording (Spoken Realms, Audible US) credits twelve performers, each cast as a character, including David Stifel as Poirot and John Burlinson as Dr Sheppard. Hearing each person in the village in a different voice makes a large cast of suspects easy to follow.
Checked, not a factor here (12)
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, so the author-reading check doesn’t apply.
–
Long bookThe UK paperback has 336 pages, under the 400-page line.
–
Single point of view and narratorDr Sheppard tells the whole story, but other cast members voice the dialogue in the scored recording, so it isn’t one reader throughout.
–
Award-winning or praised narrationWe found no critic review of this full-cast recording. The AudioFile praise we found is for Simon Jones’s reading, a different edition.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe names are English village names, and nothing we found mentions dialect.
–
Jumping timelinesThe story runs in order, from the first death to Poirot’s solution.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorThere is one point of view, Dr Sheppard’s.
–
Narration criticisedPerformance 5.0 from 1 rating on Audible US for the full cast, and no critic criticises it. Hugh Fraser’s UK reading is rated 4.78 for performance by 1,550 listeners.
–
Story depends on images or layoutA plan of part of Ackroyd’s house is printed in chapter 5 of the 1926 US text, but nothing we found says the story depends on it.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo reviewer says the names are hard to tell apart.
–
Literary or dense proseThe TLS called it “a well-written detective story” in 1926, but no critic calls the prose dense or literary.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesA sketch plan of part of Ackroyd’s house appears in the 1926 US text, but we couldn’t check whether the current UK paperback prints it. No PDF comes with the audiobook.
How the score adds up
Listening 10 points, reading 0

A full cast of twelve (10) gives listening 10 points, and nothing scores for reading. That puts it at 70%, leaning to audio. A clear-cut verdict needs more than 10 points on one side.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 6 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is Agatha Christie’s 1926 Hercule Poirot mystery, set in the village of King’s Abbot. Roger Ackroyd is found stabbed in his study the day after the woman he meant to marry has died of an overdose, and the village doctor, James Sheppard, tells the story as he helps Poirot.

The Crime Writers’ Association voted it the best crime novel ever in 2013, and it is famous for its late twist. ITV adapted it for Agatha Christie’s Poirot, with David Suchet, in 2000. It includes a stabbing, a death by overdose and blackmail.

The case for reading it

The case for reading is thin. The 1926 text prints a rough plan of part of Ackroyd’s house in chapter 5, and chapter 2 is headed “Who’s Who in King’s Abbot”, both easy to study on the page. We couldn’t check whether the current UK paperback includes the plan.

The story runs in order and the UK paperback is 336 pages, so it is a quick read. If you like to hunt for clues yourself, print lets you turn back to them.

The case for listening to it

The full-cast recording gives every character a performer of their own: twelve in all, credited role by role on Audible US, with David Stifel as Poirot, John Burlinson as Dr Sheppard and Lillian Rachel as Caroline Sheppard. In a village full of suspects, hearing each one in a different voice makes it easy to follow.

It is the complete text, unabridged, at 7 hours 36 minutes. You can’t buy it on Audible UK, where Hugh Fraser reads the HarperCollins audiobook alone in 6 hours 54 minutes, and listeners there rate his performance 4.78.

The audiobook in detail

The Online Stage performs the scored recording for Spoken Realms, released on 22 November 2022, unabridged, in 7 hours 36 minutes. The cast: David Stifel (Poirot), John Burlinson (Dr Sheppard), Lillian Rachel (Caroline Sheppard), Tyler Hyrchuk (Geoffrey Raymond), Amanda Friday (Flora Ackroyd), Lance Rasmussen (Inspector Davis), Andy Harrington (Major Blunt), Jeff Moon (Inspector Raglan), Tim Sailer (Parker), Liz Blackett (Mrs Ackroyd), Anna Grace (Ursula Bourne) and Josh Innerst (Roger Ackroyd).

It is sold on Audible US only, has two ratings so far, and we found no critic review. On Audible UK, Hugh Fraser’s HarperCollins reading (2006) is the best-known recording; Audible US also has solo readings by Richard Armitage and Simon Jones, among others. No PDF comes with it.

Who should ignore this verdict

This verdict rests on a recording you can only buy on Audible US. In the UK, Hugh Fraser’s solo reading is the audiobook to look for, though it doesn’t have the full cast that earns the verdict. If you want to hunt for clues and study the house plan, read it.
