Pachinko by Min Jin Lee: audiobook vs book, which should you choose?

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Either works

Either works for Pachinko, so pick the format you enjoy. Kirkus calls Sandra Oh “an exceptional guide”, with “shifting voices for all manner of characters”, and her reading carries a 560-page saga well. On the page it’s easier to keep track as the story moves between many members of Sunja’s family across 80 years. Her recording is on Audible US only.

Both are single-reader recordings, so the newer one, Sandra Oh’s from 2024, is the one scored. As of November 2026 it is sold on Audible US but not on Audible UK, where the only English recording is Allison Hiroto’s.

Min Jin Lee reads a note, not the story. An earlier 2017 Allison Hiroto recording no longer appears on Audible US. No full-cast or dramatised version exists. Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

One check points to reading
✓
Three or more points of view, one narratorThomas Pluck (SleuthSayers) says it “dances from character to character, using the third person omniscient”, and Lee says “multiple characters are far more important to me than one character”. One reader voices them all, and on the page it is easier to keep track of whose story you are in.
Two checks point to listening
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationKirkus calls Sandra Oh “an exceptional guide”, praising her “crisp enunciation and gentle tone” and “shifting voices for all manner of characters”. A reader who can give a big family distinct voices makes a long saga easy to follow by ear.
✓
Long bookThe UK paperback runs to 560 pages, and the audiobook lets you get through a long family saga on commutes and chores.
Checked, not a factor here (10)
–
Jumping timelinesThe story moves forward from 1910 to 1989 across three books. The TV series moves between periods, but the novel doesn’t.
–
Story depends on images or layoutNothing in the book depends on images or layout.
–
Literary or dense proseKirkus calls it “simple, captivating storytelling”, so the prose isn’t dense.
–
Narration criticisedPerformance 4.82 from 2,406 ratings on Audible US for Sandra Oh’s reading, and no critic criticises it.
–
Many similar-sounding namesThe cast is large, but no reviewer says the names are hard to tell apart.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNothing we found mentions a map or family tree, and no PDF comes with the audiobook.
–
Full cast or produced audioSandra Oh reads the novel and Min Jin Lee reads only a short note, so it isn’t a cast or a shared reading.
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, so the author-reading check doesn’t apply.
–
Single point of view and narratorLee says she writes from “an omniscient point of view”, moving between many characters.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectThe Korean and Japanese names and places are many, but no reviewer comments on how they sound in this recording.
How the score adds up
Listening 9 points, reading 8

Praised narration (6) and the book’s length (3) give listening 9 points, while many points of view read by one narrator (8) give reading 8. That’s close to even at 52%, so either format works.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 5 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Pachinko follows four generations of a Korean family, starting with Sunja’s girlhood in a fishing village in Yeongdo, Korea, in 1910, and following her family to Japan, where they face prejudice as Koreans, up to 1989. It is told in three books: Gohyang/Hometown, Motherland and Pachinko.

It was written in English, and Apple TV+ made it into a series in 2022, with a second season in 2024. It includes pregnancy outside marriage, imprisonment, war and the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

The case for reading it

The story is told by an all-seeing narrator who moves between many members of Sunja’s family. Thomas Pluck says it “dances from character to character”, and one reader voices every one of them, so print makes it easier to keep track of whose chapter you are in.

The Korean and Japanese names are many, and on the page you can see them spelled and look back when a character returns years later. The UK paperback runs to 560 pages.

The case for listening to it

Sandra Oh’s reading is the reason to listen. Kirkus calls her “an exceptional guide”, praising her “crisp enunciation and gentle tone” and “shifting voices for all manner of characters”, which helps a large family stay distinct by ear.

The story mostly runs in order, from 1910 to 1989, and Kirkus calls the storytelling “simple”, so it is easy to follow while you do something else. At nearly 18 hours it is a long listen that suits commutes and chores.

The audiobook in detail

Sandra Oh reads the 2024 Grand Central recording, unabridged, in 17 hours 48 minutes, and Min Jin Lee reads a note. As of November 2026 it is sold on Audible US, not Audible UK.

On Audible UK the English recording is Allison Hiroto’s, from W. F. Howes, 18 hours 14 minutes, unabridged, rated 4.52 for performance. No PDF comes with either recording.

Who should ignore this verdict
