Quicksilver by Callie Hart: audiobook vs book, which should you choose?

A thief from a desert city opens a gateway between realms and lands in Yvelia, a frozen Fae land, bound to the warrior Kingfisher. Two narrators share the audiobook, and that makes it the one to pick.

The verdict
The same thirteen checks for every bookSix checks point to listening, such as a full cast or produced audio, the author reading their own memoir, or one narrator for a single viewpoint. Seven point to reading, such as jumping timelines, three or more viewpoints, or a story that depends on images or layout. Each check has a weight, and the weighted total sets the verdict. Verdicts are never paid for. The percentage rises with the gap between the two sides and with how much evidence there is, so a couple of small checks can’t make a book clear cut on their own: 50 to 64 is a close call, 65 to 79 is leaning, 80 to 94 is clear, and 95 or more is clear cut. Listen on Audible

Listen to Quicksilver by Callie Hart: it’s read in duet style, and NPR says Anthony Palmini plays ‘the filthy-mouthed Kingfisher, as well as all of the other male characters in the book’, so the men get a voice of their own alongside Stella Bloom. Fresh Fiction says the ‘two great narrators’ bring the dialogue to life, and at 624 pages it’s a long book that’s easier to get through on audio.

Audible listeners rate the narration 4.7 out of 5 (4,584 ratings)

Why we reached this verdict

Every book on this site is checked against the same thirteen questions. They are based on research into what most people find easier to follow in each format, not on whether the book is any good.

Three checks point to listening
✓
Full cast or produced audioTwo narrators share it, ‘Narrated in duet style’ (Audible), and NPR’s Vanessa Romo says Palmini ‘plays the role of the filthy-mouthed Kingfisher, as well as all of the other male characters in the book’. Hearing the men in a separate voice makes the sparring between Saeris and Kingfisher easy to follow.
✓
Award-winning or praised narrationFresh Fiction’s Lauren Grady-Fisher says ‘the audio for QUICKSILVER is well done’, with ‘two great narrators’ who ‘bring the dialogue and the mysterious whisper of QUICKSILVER to life’.
✓
Long bookIt runs to 624 pages, and The Cosmic Circus notes ‘it’s not exactly a quick read’. A book that size is easier to get through when you can listen on commutes and chores.
Checked, not a factor here (10)
–
Read by the authorIt is a novel, read by narrators rather than the author.
–
Single point of view and narratorCallie Hart says Quicksilver is the first of her books with no male point of view (Christchurch City Libraries), so the story is Saeris’s alone, but two narrators read it.
–
Unfamiliar names or dialectInvented words don’t count for this check, which is for real-world names, accents and dialect.
–
Three or more points of view, one narratorOne point of view, Saeris’s, according to Callie Hart.
–
Literary or dense proseThe Cosmic Circus calls it “exciting and fast-paced”, and no reviewer calls the prose dense.
–
Narration criticisedPerformance 4.74 from 4,584 ratings on Audible UK and 4.8 from 44,101 on Audible US, and no critic criticises the reading.
–
Jumping timelinesNothing we found describes the story moving back and forth in time.
–
Story depends on images or layoutNothing in the book was found to depend on the page.
–
Many similar-sounding namesNo reviewer raises the names.
–
Maps, family trees or footnotesNothing we found mentions a map or glossary, and no PDF comes with the audiobook.
How the score adds up
Listening 19 points, reading 0

Two narrators in duet (10), praised narration (6) and the book’s length (3) give listening 19 points, and nothing scores for reading. That makes it a clear listen at 88%.

Every book gets the same thirteen checks, set in advance. Verdicts are never paid for or influenced by affiliate links. Last edited 5 November 2026, and rechecked every year as editions and narrators change. Read the checks in full · Is listening the same as reading? See what the research says.

What this book actually is

Quicksilver is the first book in Callie Hart’s Fae & Alchemy series. Saeris Fane, a 24-year-old thief from the desert city of Zilvaren, opens a gateway between realms and is pulled into Yvelia, a frozen Fae land, where she is bound to the Fae warrior Kingfisher.

It was first self-published on Kindle in June 2024, then published by Forever in December 2024. Brimstone, book 2, followed in November 2025. Netflix bought the film rights in December 2024. It is for mature readers, with explicit sex and dark content.

The case for reading it

Print has little going for it here. The story stays with Saeris and runs in order, and there’s no map or glossary to consult.

The main reason to read is the slow start: some reviewers say the first five or so chapters are mostly world-building, and you might prefer to take that at your own pace on the page. Choose print, too, if you’d rather imagine every voice yourself.

The case for listening to it

The two narrators are the reason to listen. Stella Bloom and Anthony Palmini share it in duet style, and NPR says Palmini ‘plays the role of the filthy-mouthed Kingfisher, as well as all of the other male characters in the book’, so the men sound distinct from Saeris’s telling.

Fresh Fiction says ‘two great narrators bring the dialogue and the mysterious whisper of QUICKSILVER to life’. At 624 pages it’s a big book, and the 20-hour audiobook lets you get through it on commutes and chores.

The audiobook in detail

Podium Audio’s recording runs 20 hours 41 minutes, unabridged, and is the same on Audible UK and US: about 13 hours 47 minutes at 1.5x or 10 hours 20 minutes at 2x. Listeners rate the performance 4.8 from over 44,000 ratings on Audible US.

Kingfisher’s Bonus Scenes are sold separately. Brimstone, book 2, has the same two narrators and runs 24 hours 30 minutes.

Who should ignore this verdict

Read it if you like to picture every voice yourself, or want to take the world-building opening slowly. Otherwise, the two narrators are what make the audiobook the better choice.
