Book gift ideas for every kind of reader in 2026

Books to give for every kind of reader, with what each one is about, how long it is in print and on audio, and whether the book or the audiobook makes the better gift.

Read vs Listen·Last checked ·25 min read
Summary

Pick the book for the person, then the format. Every idea below says what the book is about and whether it is better as a book or as an audiobook. Christmas stories have their own section, best given early in December; everything else works any time of year. Want to send a Kindle book or an audiobook by email instead? Here is how.

What the terms mean

Listen on Audible
On the thirteen published criteria, the audiobook is the better way to take in this book. Give the audiobook.
Read it on Kindle
The criteria point to print. Give the book, in print or on Kindle.
Either works
The criteria are close to even, or nothing could be confirmed. Give whichever format the person prefers.
How strong
Each verdict is clear cut, clear, leaning or a close call. A close call means the other format is nearly as good.

Better given as a book

Some books are better given in print or on Kindle. These have a Read verdict: Lessons in Chemistry, Hamnet, Circe, The Hobbit, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, A Game of Thrones, The Housemaid, The Thursday Murder Club, The Christmas Appeal.

Picture books and illustrated editions also make better printed gifts, even when the recording is good: the illustrations are not in the audio. Letters from Father Christmas, Matilda, A Boy Called Christmas and The Wood at Midwinter are illustrated in print. A Kindle e-ink screen does not show colour, so the full-colour ebook of Letters from Father Christmas needs a colour tablet. Books with diagrams, maps, photographs or endnotes, such as Atomic Habits, Sapiens and Say Nothing, keep those in print only.

Nothing Lasts Forever, the novel Die Hard is based on, has no audiobook, so print or Kindle is the only option. If you want something to hand over, Audible has no physical gift card, but its Print option gives you a page to wrap. And if the person lives in another country, a Kindle gift will not work, because it only works within one country’s Amazon store: send an Audible gift or a printed book instead.

How to send a Kindle book or an audiobook as a gift

A printed book is the simplest gift to wrap. If you would rather send a Kindle book or an audiobook, both arrive by email and need no postal address. Kindle books are given through Amazon, and audiobooks through Audible. These are the rules and prices on Audible’s and Amazon’s own help pages, read on 27 October 2026.

Prices and rules from Audible and Amazon help and gift pages, 27 October 2026. Single-title prices are what each store showed on that day and change often. In the UK, a 3-month gift membership worked out at £8.00 a credit against £16.99 for Project Hail Mary on its own (calculated).

How we chose

Every pick has a full Read vs Listen verdict, checked against the same thirteen published criteria (how we decide). “Give as” follows that verdict: Listen means the audiobook, Read means the book, in print or on Kindle, and Either means whichever the person prefers. Picks are grouped by type of reader, up to four each, with Christmas stories in a section of their own. Each synopsis, narrator and length comes from the book’s verdict page. UK print formats come from publishers’ and bookshops’ listings, checked on 27 October 2026; special and collector’s editions are not counted. No publisher paid for a place.

Gift prices and rules come from Audible’s and Amazon’s help and gift pages, read on 27 October 2026. Where those pages contradict each other, this guide says so rather than choosing one. For what each service costs to use, see Audible vs Kindle.

Questions people ask

What should I give someone who loves books?

Start with a book that suits them, then match the format to it. Give the audiobook when the Read vs Listen verdict is Listen, and the printed book or a Kindle copy when it is Read. Kindle books and audiobooks can be sent by email, so neither needs a postal address.

Is a Christmas book a good Christmas present?

Only if it arrives early. A book given on Christmas Day is usually read afterwards, so give Christmas stories in early December, when there is still time to enjoy them before the day. Every other section of this guide is free of Christmas books, so those picks work as presents any time.

Can you gift a Kindle book?

Yes. On the Kindle book’s Amazon page, choose to buy for others, and Amazon sends the gift by email. The recipient has to use the same country’s Amazon store, and the gift can be refunded while it is unredeemed.

How do you gift an Audible audiobook or membership?

Use the Audible website or a mobile browser, not the app. You can give one audiobook or a gift membership of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, by email or printed to hand over. Gift memberships do not renew automatically.

Can you use an Amazon gift card on Audible?

Not in the UK: Audible UK’s help pages say Amazon gift cards cannot be used. The US position was not confirmed when this guide was checked on 27 October 2026.

Can you send Audible credits as a gift?

Not directly: Audible says credits cannot be used to buy gifts. You can give a single title, or a gift membership, which comes with its own credits. In the UK on 27 October 2026, a 3-month gift membership at £23.99 worked out at £8.00 a credit, against £16.99 to buy Project Hail Mary on its own (calculated).

What happens if you gift an audiobook someone already owns?

Audible’s pages differ. In the UK, the gift centre says the gift is changed to a credit or coupon, while the help page on redeeming says the buyer is refunded. Audible US help says the buyer is refunded. Check with Audible customer service if it matters.

How do you present a book as a gift?

Use Audible’s Print option and hand the page over, or choose the email date. For a Kindle book, add a note to the gift email; Amazon’s help pages do not offer a set delivery date, so send it on the day you want it to arrive. A printed book is the other option.
